(Supplied: Meat and Livestock Australia)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">MLA&#8217;s global supply analyst Tim Jackson said the cow market was running hot because the world was facing tight supplies of lean beef.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Around the world a lot of countries are short in terms of production of lean beef,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;American cow slaughter has been falling for quite some time and in the first half of this year was down 10 per cent year on year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At the Wodonga saleyards on Tuesday, bidding for heavy cows was &#8220;keenly contested&#8221; and reached up to $4.60 a kilogram.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Meanwhile the &#8220;highlight&#8221; of the sale at Echuca this week were heavy cows reaching $4.74 a kilogram.<\/p>\n<p>US demand escalating<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In its latest market report, the US-based Steiner Consulting Group said tight supply was creating &#8220;ever escalating prices for lean beef&#8221;, with the US relying increasingly on imports from Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This is despite <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-07\/grilling-season-beef-demand-outweighs-trump-tariffs\/105387118\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105387118\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump&#8217;s 10 per cent tariff<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It said the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) was forecasting beef imports to reach 5.36 billion pounds (2.43 billion kilograms) in 2025, which was 15.7 per cent higher than last year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If this forecast proves correct, it would imply that beef imports in 2025 will outpace US beef exports by around 2.7 billion pounds [1.2 billion kilograms],&#8221;  it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Between January and July the United States imported 1.5 billion kilograms of beef with Brazil the largest supplier, followed by Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But US President Donald Trump has since enforced a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-11\/trumps-tariff-war-with-brazil-opens-gate-for-australian-beef\/105517762\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105517762\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">50 per cent tariff on Brazilian imports<\/a> bringing that beef trade almost to a halt.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"CME feeder cattle index graph showing a green line going up on the right.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/e10c1e27b861b35850e86a1abf71011d\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The benchmark CME Feeder Cattle Index has hit a record high.
