A UN Security Council resolution that called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the release of captives was vetoed by the US on Thursday, with Washington claiming that the attempt fell short in denouncing Hamas.<\/p>\n

The resolution was approved by the 14 other members of the most powerful body in the UN, which called on Israel to remove all limitations on relief deliveries to the 2.1 million Palestinians living in Gaza and described the humanitarian situation there as “catastrophic.”<\/p>\n

\u201cU.S. opposition to this resolution will come as no surprise,\u201d Morgan Ortagus, a senior U.S. policy adviser, said before the vote. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt fails to condemn Hamas or recognise Israel\u2019s right to defend itself, and it wrongly legitimises the false narratives benefiting Hamas, which have sadly found currency in this council.\u201d She added that other council members \u201cignored\u201d US warnings about the \u201cunacceptable\u201d language and instead adopted \u201cperformative action designed to draw a veto.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can understand the anger and frustration and disappointment of the Palestinian people who might be watching this session of the Security Council, hoping that there is some help in the pipeline, and this nightmare could be brought to an end,\u201d said Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian ambassador to the U.N. \u201cI can imagine the anger and frustration that it did not happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

The vote came just days before the annual gathering of world leaders at the UN General Assembly, where Gaza will be a major topic and major US allies are expected to recognise an independent Palestinian state, a largely symbolic move vehemently opposed by Israel and the US.<\/p>\n

The US veto of the resolution also comes as about half of Americans say the Israeli military response in the Gaza Strip has \u201cgone too far,\u201d according to the survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. <\/p>\n

Latest resolution tied ceasefire to release of hostages<\/p>\n

The resolution, drafted by the council\u2019s 10 elected members who serve two-year terms, goes further than previous drafts to highlight what it calls the \u201c deepening of suffering \u201d of Palestinian civilians.<\/p>\n

The effort reiterated demands from previous versions, including the release of all hostages held by Hamas and other militant groups following their 7 October 2023 surprise attack in southern Israel that launched the war in Gaza.<\/p>\n

In opposing similar resolutions since November, the US had complained that the demands, including a ceasefire, were not directly linked to the unconditional release of hostages and would only embolden Hamas militants.<\/p>\n

The new resolution expressed \u201cdeep alarm\u201d after a report released last month by the world\u2019s leading authority on food crises said Gaza City has become gripped by famine, and that it\u2019s likely to spread across the territory without a ceasefire and an end to restrictions on humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n

Israeli forces have pressed on with a new ground offensive in Gaza City. The latest Israeli operation, which started Tuesday, further escalates a conflict that has roiled the Middle East and likely pushes any ceasefire further out of reach.<\/p>\n

The Israeli military, which says it wants to \u201cdestroy Hamas\u2019 military infrastructure,\u201d hasn\u2019t given a timeline for the offensive, but there were indications it could take months.<\/p>\n

Analysts believe the outcome of Thursday’s vote further highlights US and Israeli isolation on the world stage over the nearly two-year war in Gaza. <\/p>\n
