"How

The Miami Heat enter the 2025-26 NBA season as one of the league’s most interesting teams. Despite fielding one of the youngest rosters, they are widely viewed as a dark horse contender. This optimism stems from the development of their core, particularly the duo of Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro. Alongside them, Kel’el Ware, Nikola Jovic, and Davion Mitchell have shown encouraging growth, while the offseason addition of Norman Powell adds offensive firepower.

Miami’s roster, while promising, still has notable gaps that could hinder their championship aspirations. Major among these is the lack of a reliable playmaker at the point guard position. The team’s big man rotation also requires attention, but the absence of a true floor general stands out as a more pressing concern.

Why Miami’s Guard Depth Still Leaves Questions Despite Recent Draft Moves

Tyler Herro, though a gifted scorer and versatile offensive weapon, isn’t a natural facilitator. Recognizing this, the Miami Heat selected Kasparas Jakucionis in the draft. While Jakucionis has undeniable talent, his performance at the Las Vegas Summer League raised concerns. Turnover issues and signs of inexperience suggest he’s not yet ready to take on the responsibility of leading the offense.

This opens the door for a potential move that could address the Miami Heat’s playmaking needs, signing free agent Russell Westbrook. The Heat were previously considered frontrunners to land the veteran guard earlier in the offseason. With Westbrook still available, the opportunity remains.

Westbrook’s current free agency status has surprised many, including former players. Despite being far from his MVP peak, he remains a productive contributor. During the 2024-25 season with the Denver Nuggets, he averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game. His shooting splits included, 44.9% from the field and 32.3% from three-point range. They were respectable, and his defensive effort was evident in his 1.4 steals and 0.5 blocks per game.

In Miami’s system, Russell Westbrook’s aggressive style and high energy would be a natural fit. He could thrive in a second-unit role, rotating in for Tyler Herro or Powell, depending on matchups. Given the Heat’s lineup flexibility, Westbrook’s presence could elevate both their offensive rhythm and defensive intensity.

Another factor influencing Miami’s potential pursuit of Russell Westbrook is the status of Terry Rozier. The organization has been actively seeking to offload the veteran guard. With trade interest reportedly limited, a buyout is being considered. Rozier’s exit would clear both salary and rotation space, making room for a veteran like Westbrook to step in.

Why Timing and Cap Space Could Decide Russell Westbrook’s Future in Miami

However, the financial aspect of signing Westbrook presents its own challenges. The guard has made it clear he’s not interested in a minimum deal, which has contributed to his prolonged free agency. The Miami Heat is currently above the salary cap but still below the first tax apron. This gives them options, such as using the mid-level exception or the bi-annual exception to sign Westbrook. Doing so, however, risks pushing the team into luxury tax territory.

If the Miami Heat succeeds in moving Rozier and shedding salary, the financial outlook could shift. In that scenario, offering Russell Westbrook a deal that meets his expectations becomes more feasible. Timing will be crucial, especially with other teams circling.

The Sacramento Kings have reportedly shown strong interest in signing Russell Westbrook. If Miami delays, they risk losing out on a veteran who could fill a critical role. Westbrook’s ability to run an offense, contribute defensively, and bring leadership to a young locker room makes him a valuable asset.

Ultimately, the Miami Heat’s decision will reflect their commitment to contending this season. With a young core ready to take the next step, adding a seasoned playmaker could be the difference between a promising campaign and a deep playoff run. Westbrook may not be the star he once was, but in Miami’s system, he could be exactly what they need.
