Harris asked her staff to put her on a call with Trump after authorities arrested a gunman who tried unsuccessfully to assassinate him while he was golfing in West Palm Beach, Florida, in September last year.<\/p>\n
At the time, Trump blamed<\/a> Harris and President Joe Biden\u2019s rhetoric for the attack: \u201cThey use highly inflammatory language. I can use it too\u2014far better than they can\u2014but I don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n During their phone call, however, Harris recalled that Trump struck a softer tone.<\/p>\n \u201cYou\u2019ve done a great job, you really have,\u201d Trump told her. \u201cMy only problem is it makes it very hard for me to be angry at you. It\u2019s like, what am I going to do? How do I say bad things about you now?\u201d<\/p>\n Harris responded: \u201cWell, then don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m going to tone it down,\u201d Trump replied. \u201cI will. You\u2019re going to see.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump proceeded to tell Harris that his daughter, Ivanka, was a \u201cbig fan.\u201d He also asked Harris to say \u201chello\u201d to her husband, Doug Emhoff, on his behalf.<\/p>\n But Harris was determined not to fall for her opponent\u2019s niceties.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s a con man. He\u2019s really good at it,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI\u2019d readied myself for a phone conversation with Mr. Hyde, but Dr. Jekyll had picked up the call.\u201d<\/p>\n In a second phone call where she conceded the heated 2024 race to Trump, Harris said she urged her rival to bring the country together even though she believed at the moment that it was a lost cause.<\/p>\n \u201cI am going to be so nice and respectful,\u201d Trump told her. \u201cYou are a tough, smart customer, and I say that with great respect. And you also have a beautiful name. I got use of that name, it\u2019s Kamala.\u201d<\/p>\n The Daily Beast has reached out to the White House for comment.<\/p>\n The two have continued to trade barbs publicly since Trump returned to the White House in January.<\/p>\n Most recently, Harris joined former President Barack Obama<\/a> in calling out Trump\u2019s \u201cabuse of power\u201d after the Federal Communications Commission threatened action against ABC over comments made by late-night host Jimmy Kimmel about the death of Charlie Kirk. The network announced Wednesday that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be pulled indefinitely. <\/p>\n What we are witnessing is an outright abuse of power.<\/p>\n This administration is attacking critics and using fear as a weapon to silence anyone who would speak out.
