Ed Helms recently stopped by SiriusXM\u2019s \u201cWhere Everybody Knows Your Name\u201d podcast, hosted by Ted Danson, and remembered how nervous he was for his parents to see \u201cThe Hangover,\u201d Todd Phillips\u2019 2009 R-rated comedy blockbuster, which paired Helms with Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis. Helms said his upbringing made a movie like \u201cThe Hangover\u201d an absolutely nuts choice for his family.<\/p>\n
\u201cI grew up in a kind of a repressed Southern home. Politically, very progressive, but still a very socially conservative kind of environment,\u201d Helms said. \u201cAnd so \u2018The Hangover\u2019 is nuts. That\u2019s not what they raised me to do, to be in a movie like \u2018The Hangover.\u2019 So my parents \u2014 at that point they\u2019d seen me do crazy stuff on \u2018The Daily Show\u2019 and \u2018The Office\u2019 \u2014 and so there was some sort of acceptance already, but, still, I was nervous for my parents to see \u2018The Hangover.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Helms was already a TV star by the time \u201cThe Hangover\u201d opened in theaters thanks to his correspondent duties on \u201cThe Daily Show\u201d from 2002 to 2006 and his role of Andy Bernard on \u201cThe Office,\u201d which kicked off in 2006.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was like 35 when that movie came out, and I\u2019m still nervous about my parents,\u201d Helms joked to Danson.<\/p>\n
The actor ended up taking his parents to the premiere because it was his leading role in a big studio comedy. He remembered: \u201cI\u2019m looking at my mom, the lights come up, and she\u2019s crying. Tears streaming down her face, and, for a second, I\u2019m like, \u2018Did I just break my poor mom\u2019s heart?\u2019 She says to me that \u2018That was so funny,\u2019 and just [gave me] a big hug. I\u2019ll just never forget that was such a special moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
Helms concluded, \u201c\u2018The Hangover\u2019 was such a pivotal moment in my career, in my life, and for mom to just be all in on it, it meant so much.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Hangover\u201d became a pop culture sensation and earned $469 million at the worldwide box office, ranking as the highest-grossing R-rated movie at the time. It launched a trilogy, with Helms and his co-stars returning for 2011\u2019s \u201cThe Hangover Part II\u201d and 2013\u2019s \u201cThe Hangover Part III.\u201d Cooper said on \u201cThe New Yorker Radio Hour\u201d<\/a> in 2023 that he would be on board to return for future sequels.<\/p>\n \u201cI would probably do\u00a0\u2018Hangover 4\u2019\u00a0in an instant,\u201d Cooper said at the time. \u201cJust because I love Todd [Phillips], I love Zach [Galifianakis], I love Ed [Helms] so much, I probably would.\u201d<\/p>\n However, Cooper doubted a fourth \u201cHangover\u201d movie getting off the ground because writer-director Todd Phillips has moved on to bigger budget studio fare like the \u201cJoker\u201d movies.
