In most cases, we\u2019re firmly at the Emmys.<\/p>\n<p>Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter star in a new revival of \u201cWaiting for Godot\u201d on Broadway. Bruce Glikas\/WireImage<\/p>\n<p>Will these stars onstage mark more box-office triumphs and critical smackdowns?<\/p>\n<p>Who will dart up to the mic stand at June\u2019s Tony Awards, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/08\/entertainment\/sarah-snook-wins-best-actress-in-a-play-at-2025-tony-awards\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">like Sarah Snook from \u201cSuccession\u201d did<\/a> last this summer, and who will slink back home to Malibu in shame on closing night?<\/p>\n<p>Who will fly? And who will flop?<\/p>\n<p>One of the hottest shows opens next week: A revival of \u201cWaiting for Godot\u201d starring Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter. \u201cBill and Ted\u2019s Aburdist Adventure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sources say John Wick has a strong $10 million advance.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\tJohnny Oleksinski<\/p>\n<p>Naturally. He\u2019s the season\u2019s biggest name by far, and tix cost as much as $670 face value. Still, at many performances you can get in for $120.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One boon is director Jamie Lloyd. His <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/20\/entertainment\/sunset-boulevard-review-nicole-scherzinger-stuns-in-scorching-brilliant-broadway-revival\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revival of \u201cSunset Boulevard\u201d<\/a> just won a Tony.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One horrifying risk is Jamie Lloyd. His <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/01\/entertainment\/tom-holland-stuck-in-heinous-london-romeo-and-juliet\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revival of \u201cRomeo and Juliet\u201d<\/a> in London with \u201cSpider-Man\u201d Tom Holland was poisonous and deservedly mocked.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cMatrix\u201d star isn\u2019t known for his booming voice. But Lloyd is known for cranking up the volume so famous faces can breathily whisper. No matter how reviews shake out, \u201cGodot\u201d will sell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHacks\u201d star Jean Smart\u2019s play \u201cCall Me Izzy\u201d got negative reviews from critics. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>A couple A-List projects already happened, for better or worse.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jean Smart surely got a mood lift from her fourth Emmy win for \u201cHacks\u201d last Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Because her awful one-woman show \u201cCall is Izzy\u201d at Studio 54 was <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/12\/entertainment\/call-me-izzy-review-jean-smarts-good-but-broadway-play-is-a-hack-job\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ripped to shreds by reviewers <\/a>and played to half-full houses. A Tony nod would be a tall order.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, \u201cArt\u201d with James Corden, Neil Patrick Harris and Bobby Cannavale, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/16\/entertainment\/art-review-james-corden-and-neil-patrick-harris-drone-on-about-paintings-in-retro-broadway-comedy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which opened last week <\/a>to a polite response, has an $8 million advance, I\u2019m told.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The comedy\u2019s OK, but Corden got the strongest notices. The former \u201cLate Late Show\u201d host must be over the moon this week to be the former \u201cLate Late Show\u201d host.<\/p>\n<p>James Corden, Bobby Cannavale and Neil Patrick Harris star in a revival of \u201cArt.\u201d  Bruce Glikas\/FilmMagic<\/p>\n<p>Three legit stage stars are back on the boards \u2014 under very different circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>The reliably fantastic Laurie Metcalf plays a cranky aunt in a moving new play by Samuel D. Hunter (\u201cThe Whale\u201d) called \u201cLittle Bear Ridge Road.\u201d I liked it a lot at Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Kristin Chenoweth leads Stephen Schwartz\u2019s first Broadway musical since \u201cWicked,\u201d \u201cThe Queen of Versailles.\u201d The OG \u2014 Original Glinda \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2025\/09\/19\/entertainment\/kristin-chenoweth-tearfully-addresses-backlash-over-charlie-kirk-tribute\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stirred up some outrage<\/a> among theater folks recently when she mourned Charlie Kirk in an Instagram comment.<\/p>\n<p>Much to the chagrin of loudmouths, these social media controversies never affect ticket sales \u2014 only publicists\u2019 inboxes. But the show itself might. I don\u2019t know a soul who loved \u201cVersailles,\u201d which is based on the documentary, when it played out of town.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A source said its advance is $2.5 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ver-sigh. That\u2019s worrying. Because as the title would imply, it\u2019s not a blackbox chamber piece.<\/p>\n<p>Kristin Chenoweth is coming back in \u201cThe Queen of Versailles.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>And Lea Michele fans are full of glee that she\u2019s returning in the revival of \u201cChess.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That musical, with catchy pop songs by ABBA\u2019s Benny Andersson and Bj\u00f6rn Ulvaeus, will be a major test of Michele and co-star Aaron Tveit\u2019s raw appeal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The show, a geopolitical love story, was an infamous flop that ran just three weeks in 1988.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Frank Rich wrote that it had \u201cthe theatrical consistency of quicksand\u201d \u2014 a phrase that\u2019s conspicuously absent from ads in front of the Imperial Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps they\u2019ve finally fixed the notoriously confusing script, and maybe new generations will fall in love with tunes like \u201cOne Night in Bangkok\u201d and \u201cI Know Him So Well.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Possibly. But \u201cFunny Girl\u201d and \u201cMoulin Rouge,\u201d \u201cChess\u201d is not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChess\u201d will test the box-office appeal of Lea Michele and Aaron Tveit. <\/p>\n<p>A note on the Spring:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Two stars of \u201cThe Bear,\u201d Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, are respectively appearing in the plays \u201cProof\u201d and \u201cDog Day Afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, in 2024 and 2025, Broadway got the cast of HBO\u2019s \u201cSuccession\u201d (Culkin, Snook and Jeremy Strong) and in 2026 it welcomes the ensemble of FX\u2019s \u201cThe Bear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prestige TV pileups are a weird model to repeat.<\/p>\n<p>At least we can sleep soundly knowing that every single theater season we\u2019ll always see the cast of \u201cThe Gilded Age.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Last season, Broadway was bombarded by celebs.
