Actors who have worked for Disney<\/a> are urging people to boycott the media and entertainment giant after its ABC network suspended comedian Jimmy Kimmel\u2019s late-night show over remarks he made about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.<\/p>\n

The internet was already lighting up with users sharing screenshots<\/a> of canceled subscriptions to Disney-owned streaming services or canceled vacations at Disney properties. <\/p>\n

Protestors have also appeared outside the corporate headquarters in Burbank, Calif., while angry Disney+ and Hulu<\/a> users have flooded social media accounts and customer service pages.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Hollywood celebrities have been expressing support for Kimmel and disappointment at Disney for suspending his show indefinitely amid pressure from the FCC. <\/p>\n

But some stars have gone a step further by endorsing calls to boycott Disney, including actors featured in Marvel shows and movies.<\/p>\n

Tatiana Maslany, who starred in the Disney+ series\u00a0She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, posted a behind-the-scenes image from the show on Instagram<\/a> with text overlaid that says \u201ccancel your @disneyplus @hulu @espn subscriptions!\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition, Marisa Tomei, who played Aunt May in\u00a0Spider-Man movies distributed by Sony<\/a> as well as Avengers\u00a0movies from Disney, reposted a call to \u201cunsubscribe and boycott\u201d Disney platforms.<\/p>\n

That follows other talent threatening to turn away from Disney. Writer and producer\u00a0Damon Lindelof, whose show Lost ran on ABC, expressed his solidarity with Kimmel and said he hopes the suspension of his show is lifted soon.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it isn\u2019t, I can\u2019t in good conscience work for the company that imposed it,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Disney didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment. <\/p>\n

Boycotts of Disney streaming platforms and theme parks could create major financial repercussions, especially as those businesses have helped prop up earnings at the conglomerate recently.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s latest quarterly report showed that Disney+ hit 128 million subscribers, up 1.8 million from the prior quarter, with Disney+ and\u00a0Hulu combining for 183 million subscribers. <\/p>\n

That helped the streaming business grow its profit, climbing further out of a year-ago loss and offsetting weaker results in film and TV.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the parks and experiences division, which includes the cruise line, saw revenue and operating income jump on increased spending from customers and more hotel stays.<\/p>\n

During his show, Kimmel criticized what he called the \u201cMAGA gang\u201d for \u201cdesperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Afterward but before ABC pulled the show, FCC Chair Brendan\u00a0Carr called Kimmel\u2019s comments \u201ctruly sick\u201d and hinted at regulatory action against the network and Disney, warning \u201cwe can do this the easy way or we can do this the hard way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nexstar Media Group<\/a>, which owns 32 ABC affiliate stations and is\u00a0pursuing a $6.2 billion merger with Tegna<\/a>\u00a0requiring FCC approval, announced it would preempt the show \u201cfor the foreseeable future.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sinclair<\/a>\u00a0Broadcasting, the nation\u2019s largest ABC affiliate group, also removed the show and\u00a0demanded Kimmel apologize to Kirk\u2019s family<\/a>\u00a0and make a \u201csubstantial personal donation\u201d to them and Turning Point USA.<\/p>\n

After Kimmel\u2019s suspension, Carr later\u00a0told CNBC<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cwe\u2019re not done yet.\u201d <\/p>\n

While Carr has drawn broad support from Republicans, including President Donald Trump, some conservatives have expressed alarm<\/a> at the prospect of regulatory infringement on free speech.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hate what Jimmy Kimmel said. I am thrilled that he was fired,\u201d Sen. Ted Cruz\u00a0said<\/a> Friday on his podcast. \u201cBut let me tell you, if the government gets in the business of saying, \u2018We don\u2019t like what you, the media, have said, we\u2019re going to ban you from the airwaves if you don\u2019t say what we like\u2019\u2014that will end up bad for conservatives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cruz, who is the chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over the FCC, called Carr\u2019s remarks \u201cdangerous as hell,\u201d warning against a future where the government can influence what broadcast networks put out.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it is unbelievably dangerous for government to put itself in the position of saying, \u2018We\u2019re going to decide what speech we like and what we don\u2019t, and we\u2019re going to threaten to take you off air if we don\u2019t like what you\u2019re saying,\u2019\u201d Cruz added. \u201cAnd it might feel good right now to threaten Jimmy Kimmel, but when it is used to silence every conservative in America, we will regret it.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
