{"id":171946,"date":"2025-09-21T14:21:22","date_gmt":"2025-09-21T14:21:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/171946\/"},"modified":"2025-09-21T14:21:22","modified_gmt":"2025-09-21T14:21:22","slug":"taking-common-vitamin-d-supplement-may-actually-lower-your-levels-of-vitamin-d3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/171946\/","title":{"rendered":"Taking common vitamin D supplement may actually lower your levels of vitamin D3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Taking vitamin D2 supplements could actually reduce the levels of vitamin D3 in your body, according to a surprising new <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/nutrit\/nuaf166\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">study<\/a> published in Nutrition Reviews.<\/p>\n<p>The finding comes just as much of the Northern Hemisphere heads into autumn \u2013 the time when health experts recommend people start supplementing with vitamin D.<\/p>\n<p>Vitamin D is essential for regulating calcium and phosphate in the body, which in turn keeps bones, teeth and muscles healthy. Deficiency is common worldwide: in the US, rates are as high as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nutrition-report\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">31 per cent<\/a> among non-Hispanic Black adults.<\/p>\n<p>But not all vitamin D is created equal. It comes in two main forms: Vitamin D2, which is found in plants and mushrooms, and Vitamin D3, which is produced in the skin when exposed to sunlight, and also found in animal products such as oily fish.<\/p>\n<p>During the summer, people living in higher latitudes can usually make enough vitamin D through sunlight exposure. In autumn and winter, however, the Sun never rises high enough for this to happen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople often think that on a sunny day in October, November and December they\u2019ll make vitamin D,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surrey.ac.uk\/people\/susan-lanham-new\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Prof Susan Lanham-New<\/a>, head of the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Surrey and study co-author, told BBC Science Focus. \u201cBut they just won\u2019t make any.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A simple rule of thumb: unless your shadow is shorter than your height, the Sun is not strong enough for vitamin D3 production.<\/p>\n<p>To explore the effects of vitamin D2 supplementation, Emily Brown, a PhD research fellow in Lanham-New\u2019s group, analysed 20 randomised controlled trials. In 18 of them, participants who received vitamin D2 had lower levels of vitamin D3 compared with placebo or control groups.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"796\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/vitamin-d-sun.jpg\" alt=\"Yellow soft shell D-vitamin capsule against sun and blue sky on sunny day.\" class=\"wp-image-207368\"\/>In northern latitudes during winter, our bodies can&#8217;t produce vitamin D \u2013\u00a0even on sunny days &#8211; Credit: Getty<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want people to think vitamin D2 is in any way dangerous. It\u2019s not,\u201d Brown told BBC Science Focus. \u201cVitamin D2 still raises your total vitamin D levels, but we think vitamin D3 is preferential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Previous <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28679555\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">research<\/a> has shown that vitamin D3 is converted more efficiently into the active form of the vitamin than vitamin D2, suggesting it may be a better choice for supplementation, particularly during the darker months.<\/p>\n<p>Brown now plans to investigate the reverse effect: what happens to D2 when people take D3.<\/p>\n<p>The results are especially relevant for vegans, who cannot obtain D3 from traditional dietary sources.
