\n\tMarlon Wayans<\/a> does not appear to be thrown by the critical response to his new football-centric horror movie, Him<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe actor stars alongside Tyriq Withers<\/a> in director Justin Tipping<\/a>\u2018s film that counts Jordan Peele<\/a> as a producer. Receiving a C- CinemaScore from audiences, Him opened this weekend in second place<\/a> at the domestic box office with a projected $13.5 million, which was below earlier estimates of $15 million. <\/p>\n

\n\tWayans took to Instagram<\/a> on Friday to defend the project in light of negative reviews that have led to a current 28 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. His post included a carousel of Rotten Tomatoes scores for some of his previous films that have become well-regarded among fans, including White Chicks and the first two Scary Movie features. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cJust to be clear\u2026 I respect critics,\u201d Wayans wrote in the caption. \u201cTheir job is to Critique. I respect their work. It shapes our industry. But an opinion does not always mean it\u2019s everyone\u2019s opinion. Some movies are ahead of the curve. Innovation is not always embraced and art is to be interpreted and it\u2019s subjective.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe star continued, \u201cI\u2019ve had a career of making classic movies that weren\u2019t critically received and those movies went on to be CLASSICS. So don\u2019t take anyone\u2019s opinion just go see for yourself. Love to all. Him in theaters now.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tUniversal<\/a>\u2018s Him\u00a0follows a rising quarterback (Withers) who gets an offer from an aging player (Wayans) to learn how to succeed at any cost.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn his review of Him<\/a> for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Frank Scheck wrote, \u201cWhile it starts out promisingly, it seriously devolves in its second half into a surreal phantasmagoria that\u2019s more gonzo than chilling.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tDuring a conversation with THR<\/a> at the film\u2019s premiere, Wayans explained that his versatility as a performer made him appealing to the Him team: \u201cThey\u2019re like, \u2018You\u2019re one of one. You\u2019re the only one who is doing what you\u2019re doing at the level that you\u2019re doing it. Other people have \u2014 Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy, Jim Carrey \u2014 but right now, the world hasn\u2019t seen your everything, so let\u2019s go do it.’\u201d <\/p>\n
