{"id":174905,"date":"2025-09-22T22:46:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-22T22:46:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/174905\/"},"modified":"2025-09-22T22:46:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T22:46:08","slug":"u-s-ryder-cup-captain-keegan-bradley-defends-decision-to-pay-american-players","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/174905\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley defends decision to pay American players"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FARMINGDALE, N.Y. \u2013 U.S. captain Keegan Bradley on Monday defended the PGA of America\u2019s decision to pay American players a stipend to play in the Ryder Cup.<\/p>\n<p>This year, for the first time, each U.S. player will receive a $200,000 stipend in addition to $300,000 that will be distributed to charity.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s an increase from the $200,000 that was strictly earmarked for charity previously. It\u2019s a similar payment scheme to what the PGA Tour has for Presidents Cup participants.<\/p>\n<p>Bradley has already said that he will donate the entirety of his $500,000 bonus. He did not disclose how many of the U.S. players will follow suit, saying it\u2019s a \u201cpersonal decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe PGA of America asked me to help out with this,\u201d Bradley said, \u201cand this is the best way we came up with to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Added PGA CEO Derek Sprague on Monday\u2019s \u201cLive From the Ryder Cup&#8221;: &#8220;[Bradley] wanted to do more good with the money, so that\u2019s why there is $300,000 out of the $500,000 allocation going to charity. &#8230; At the end of the day, charity\u2019s going to win again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pay-for-play issue dates to the 1999 matches but came under the spotlight once again two years ago in Rome, with reports that U.S. players wanted to be compensated for participating in the PGA\u2019s biggest money-making event.<\/p>\n<p>Bradley was asked four questions \u2013 by two U.K.-based journalists \u2013 about the new plan, and if it creates a perception that it \u201cmeans more\u201d to the European players because they\u2019re not being paid to play.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"Link\" aria-label=\"U.S. captain Keegan Bradley has thought about playing Ryder Cup \u2018every second\u2019\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/golf\/news\/u-s-captain-keegan-bradley-has-thought-about-playing-ryder-cup-every-second\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"Ryder Cup Preview - Monday September 22nd\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758581168_73_\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the first official day of Ryder Cup week, as his team began its preparations in earnest, U.S. captain Keegan Bradley admitted Monday that he thought about playing \u201cevery second.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I\u2019m not concerned about what Europe does or what they think. I\u2019m concerned about what my team is doing,\u201d Bradley said. \u201cWe did the best we could, and I think a lot of good is going to come from this.
