Recently, Humboldt-focused corners of social media<\/a> were hotly debating the series of provocative guerrilla murals that adorned a number of downtown Eureka and Arcata walls for less than a day last week. Paired with scrawled messages like \u201cThis Was Never Their Land to Extract From\u201d and \u201cDeath of Greed,\u201d the all-black painted works<\/a> feature figures hanged by the neck and holding flowers.\u00a0<\/p>\n Some were outraged, some puzzled, while some celebrated the artist\u2019s brave vision. Art, man. Whoa.\u00a0<\/p>\n Local law enforcement say they are investigating the origin of the displays. No arrests have been made, nor have any suspects been identified as of yet.\u00a0<\/p>\n While the figures have been painted over, they linger in our mind. But what do you think the mean?\u00a0<\/p>\n ??\u00a0%\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cIt\u2019s an anti-capitalism\/anti-colonialism message.\u201d\n <\/p>\n ??\u00a0%\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cIt\u2019s a a pro-environment message.\u201d\n <\/p>\n ??\u00a0%\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cThe work is intended to bring awareness to recent reports of lynchings in the Southern U.S.\u201d\n <\/p>\n ??\u00a0%\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cThe artist is racist and intended to intimidate people of color.\u201d\n <\/p>\n ??\u00a0%\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cThe art is intentionally vague, leaving its meaning open to the viewer\u2019s interpretation.\u201d\n <\/p>\n ??\u00a0%\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cI don\u2019t care what the so-called artist was trying to say. It\u2019s vandalism.\u201d\n <\/p>\n ??\u00a0%\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cWell now, I have been known to appreciate unsanctioned, Bansky-esque street art in the past. This, however, sucks.\u201d\n <\/p>\n ??\u00a0%\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cAhh, I see you missed the true meaning of this bold work. Thankfully, I will enlighten all of you in the comments below.
