Biologists said this bird \u201cmay be among the first examples of a hybrid animal that exists because of recent changing patterns in the climate.\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cWe think it\u2019s the first observed vertebrate that\u2019s hybridized as a result of two species both expanding their ranges due, at least in part, to climate change,\u201d said Brian Stokes, a graduate student in ecology, evolution and behavior at UT and first author of the study.<\/p>\n
Stokes studies green jays in Texas. While monitoring several social media sites where birders share photos of their sightings, he came across a grainy picture of an \u201codd-looking blue bird\u201d that was posted by a woman on the Northeast Side.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was vaguely like a blue jay, but clearly different,\u201d the release stated.<\/p>\n
Stokes was invited to the birder\u2019s backyard to capture the bird for research.<\/p>\n
\u201cStokes took a quick blood sample of this strange bird, banded its leg to help relocate it in the future, and then let it go,\u201d according to the release.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know what it was, but it was kind of like random happenstance,\u201d Stokes said. \u201cIf it had gone two houses down, probably it would have never been reported anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n
