\n\tThe cast of \u201cDawson\u2019s Creek<\/a>\u201d came together on Sept. 22 for an emotional, powerful reunion in New York City.<\/p>\n

\n\tMichelle Williams, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson<\/a>, Mary Beth Peil, John Wesley Shipp, Mary-Margaret Humes, Nina Repeta, Kerr Smith, Meredith Monroe and Busy Philipps took the stage at the Richard Rodgers Theater to read the 1998 pilot episode. Lin-Manuel Miranda stepped in for James Van Der Beek<\/a>, who was unable to attend due to illness.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe evening, narrated by Ren\u00e9e Elise Goldsberry, was to raise money for F Cancer<\/a> and Van Der Beek, who is fighting colorectal cancer. Before and after the script reading, Van Der Beek appeared on screen via video message, getting choked up.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI can\u2019t believe I don\u2019t get to hug my cast mates,\u201d he said in the first video. \u201cI wanted to stand on that stage and thank every single person in this theater for being here tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter the episode was over, Van Der Beek came back on screen. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cNow, nobody in their right mind would ever draw a parallel between the two, but one very big similarity between Dawson and the \u201cPhantom of the Opera\u201d is that both of them were faced with the reality that the woman they loved truly loved somebody else, said, \u2018Go to him. Go to him now before I change my mind.\u2019 Only one resulted in a crying face meme,\u201d Van Der Beek said. He went on to introduce Norm Lewis to the stage to perform \u201cThe Music of the Night.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnother surprise of the night was when Steven Spielberg \u2014 Dawson\u2019s hero throughout the series \u2014 appeared on screen with a message. \u201cDawson, you made it. Maybe someday, I will get to have a Dawson\u2019s closet,\u201d he said. (Video can be seen here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

\n\tAt the end of the night, Goldsberry gave the audience permission to film, and she began singing the theme song, Paula Cole\u2019s \u201cI Don\u2019t Want to Wait.\u201d She was then joined by the rest of the cast and Van Der Beek\u2019s daughters, who both sang verses solo. His wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, and the rest of his children later joined the stage. (See the video below.)<\/p>\n

\n\tThe reunion was Williams\u2019 idea<\/a>, the show\u2019s creator told Variety exclusively ahead of the event. \u201cShe enlisted me, [her husband and \u201cHamilton\u201d director,] Thomas [Kail] and Greg [Berlanti] to help. From there, others joined the planning party. Jason Moore agreed to direct, and we were off and running.
