A number of experienced big men still remain on the free agent market ahead of training camp next week, but one potential option for the Celtics has found a new home. Former Knicks big man Precious Achiuwa has agreed to a non-guaranteed deal with the Heat according to Shams Charania of ESPN.com. The contract is for the veteran’s minimum.

Achiwua played regular minutes for the Knicks for much of last season, appearing in 57 contests while averaging 6.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. However, his role diminished in the postseason once Mitchell Robinson returned to the lineup. He appeared in just eight postseason games during the Knicks run to the East Finals, usually only seeing action when the Knicks’ top bigs got into foul trouble.

The 26-year-old now rejoins the Heat, the team that originally drafted him back in 2020. The 6-foot-9 big man was taken at No. 20 overall and spent one year in Miami before he was traded away to the Raptors. He now gets a potential reunion in South Beach and joins a growing list of established veterans around the league that were forced to settle for non-guaranteed contracts this summer in a tough market. Thomas Bryant also signed with the Cavs for a non-guaranteed deal this week while Malcolm Brogdon and Landry Shamet did so with the Knicks last week.

The Celtics still have an open roster spot on the 15-man roster entering training camp but appear poised to stand pat with their current center depth chart for now. The team still has Neemias Queta and Xavier Tillman on their roster after losing Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford and Luke Kornet to trades and free agency. Boston also added Luka Garza and Chris Boucher on veteran’s minimum deals and drafted Amari Williams in the second-round. He has already signed a two-way contract.

The Celtics kick off training camp on September 30 at the Auerbach Center.
