(Photo Credit: Claire Lager, Smithsonian)<\/p>\n<p>In a landmark effort to combat the devastating effects of climate change, a new global alliance with key leadership from the University of Hawai\u02bbi at M\u0101noa has been established to create a \u201cNoah\u02bbs Ark\u201d for coral reefs. The initiative, detailed in a publication in <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/bioscience\/advance-article\/doi\/10.1093\/biosci\/biaf117\/8239028\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BioScience<\/a>, focuses on building a worldwide network of coral biorepositories to safeguard the genetic diversity of these vital ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>The research, led by Mary Hagedorn of the UH M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.himb.hawaii.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hawai\u02bbi Institute of Marine Biology<\/a> and Smithsonian\u2019s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, highlights the critical need for a proactive conservation strategy. With global carbon emissions continuing to rise, the alliance aims to provide a critical safeguard against extinction by preserving coral genetic material in biosecure facilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018A bold plan to save coral\u2019<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"two scientists\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-222592\"  \/>Mary Hagedorn and Gin Carter checking a frozen coral biorepository. (Photo Credit: Smithsonian)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an urgent and ambitious endeavor,\u201d said Hagedorn, lead author of the study. \u201cBy integrating and standardizing our processes globally, we can ensure that we have the resources to not only prevent extinction but also to support long-term coral adaptation, resilience and restoration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The network will use a three-pronged approach to conservation: frozen nonliving tissue samples, live coral colonies in aquaculture, and cryopreserved (deep-freezing process) samples of frozen and live coral. This innovative approach provides a last-resort safety net, ensuring that essential bio\u2014and genetic diversity can be preserved for future generations.<\/p>\n<p>The global biorepository network will be instrumental in developing new, stronger types of coral, because coral can now be spawned in captivity. Therefore this network can be used to restore damaged reefs and help them survive in a changing climate today while holding other material for the future.
