\n\tBruce Springsteen<\/a> talks about a lot of things in his new Time magazine<\/a> cover story: fame, family, therapy, touring with the E Street Band and the 50 th anniversary of his epochal \u201cBorn to Run\u201d album \u2014 in fact, the issue appears almost exactly 50 years after his first Time cover (and simultaneous Newsweek one), which heralded him as rock\u2019s bright new hope.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut the most attention-grabbing quotes are his fairly fearless statements about President Donald Trump<\/a>, whom he initially shied away from criticizing directly (in a 2017 Variety interview<\/a>) but increasingly has slammed, beginning during his 2018 Broadway residency<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tSince Trump\u2019s re-election last year, he and the Boss have traded barbs, with Springsteen calling his administration<\/a> \u201ccorrupt, incompetent and treasonous\u201d and Trump saying <\/a>the musician is \u201cdumb as a rock,\u201d posting a video mocking him, and groundlessly calling for a investigation<\/a> into his and other artists\u2019 support of Trump\u2019s 2024 election opponent Kamala Harris.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpringsteen fires back in the new interview, with possibly his strongest statements yet.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf I\u2019m going to stay true to who I\u2019ve tried to be\u2026I can\u2019t give these guys a free pass,\u201d he says, addressing Trump and his enablers in government. \u201cA lot of people bought into his lies. He doesn\u2019t care about the forgotten \u2014 anybody but himself and the multibillionaires who stood behind him on Inauguration Day.\u201d However, he adds, \u201cYou have to face the fact that a good number of Americans are simply comfortable with his politics of power and dominance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs for Trump\u2019s insults against him, he says, \u201cI absolutely couldn\u2019t care less what he thinks about me\u2026 He\u2019s the living personification of what the 25th Amendment and impeachment were for. If Congress had any guts, he\u2019d be consigned to the trash heap of history.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNor does he spare the Democratic party, which has been spectacularly ineffective in the face of Trump and the Republican\u2019s power grabs. \u201cWe\u2019re desperately in need of an effective alternative party, or for the Democratic Party to find someone who can speak to the majority of the nation,\u201d he says. \u201cThere is a problem with the language that they\u2019re using and the way they\u2019re trying to reach people.\u201d<\/p>\n
