This affects subscriptions to\u00a0Azure cloud storage\u00a0and certain AI services.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe do not provide technology to\u00a0facilitate\u00a0mass surveillance of civilians,\u201d Microsoft vice chair and\u00a0president\u00a0Brad Smith wrote in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/on-the-issues\/2025\/09\/25\/update-on-ongoing-microsoft-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">blog post<\/a>. \u201cWe have applied this principle in every country around the world, and we have insisted on it repeatedly for more than two decades. This is why we explained publicly on August 15 that Microsoft\u2019s standard terms of service prohibit the use of our technology for mass surveillance of civilians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft informed Israel of its decision last week, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/sep\/25\/microsoft-blocks-israels-use-of-its-technology-in-mass-surveillance-of-palestinians\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Guardian<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision follows Microsoft\u2019s\u00a0ongoing\u00a0review\u00a0of the matter,\u00a0which started in August. The investigation\u00a0was sparked by a story in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/aug\/06\/microsoft-israeli-military-palestinian-phone-calls-cloud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Guardian<\/a>\u00a0that reported that Unit 8200, the elite Israel military intelligence unit, was\u00a0using Azure cloud storage to\u00a0house\u00a0data on phone calls\u00a0obtained through the surveillance of\u00a0Palestinians\u00a0in Gaza and the West Bank.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his blog post, Smith also said the company appreciated The Guardian\u2019s\u00a0initial\u00a0reporting.
