Following dismal early reactions, Smurfs<\/a> has debuted to overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics, earning a low Rotten Tomatoes score. Director Chris Miller\u2019s animated reboot struggles to find its footing, with many calling it \u201ctedious\u201d and weighed down by corporate overreach.<\/p>\n

New Smurfs movie debuts with horrible reviews<\/p>\n

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian<\/a> wrote, \u201cThis film shows yet again that there is something about the Smurfs\u2026which is basically kryptonite to comedy and entertainment.\u201d Mark Kermode of Kermode and Mayo\u2019s Take<\/a> described it as a \u201cmakes-no-sense\u2026adventure in which the Smurfs slide through various multiverses like superheroes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jake Coyle of the Associated Press<\/a> observed, \u201cYou can almost feel IP-rights pressures animating the entire enterprise.\u201d Odie Henderson of The Boston Globe<\/a> stated, \u201cWhen the credits rolled on this animated bore, I felt like a Smurfing fool for getting my hopes up.\u201d<\/p>\n

John Nugent from Empire Magazine<\/a> gave the film 1 out of 5 stars and wrote, \u201cIt\u2019s a tedious entry in a tedious series, with more than a whiff of corporate mandate about it.\u201d Barry Hertz from The Globe and Mail<\/a> stated, \u201cThere\u2019s little reason for director Chris Miller\u2026to have spent so much time and energy to push these Smurfs out into the Smurfin\u2019 world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alonso Duralde of The Film Verdict<\/a> noted, \u201cFar too much downtime between Smurfs\u2019 sporadic delights.\u201d Michael O\u2019Sullivan from The Washington Post<\/a> rated it 2\/4 and said, \u201cSmurfs may be all over the multiverse, but it doesn\u2019t land anywhere worth writing home about.\u201d Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> stated, \u201cIt\u2019s directed by Chris Miller\u2026who also voices Grouchy Smurf. Watching the movie makes it easy to understand why he chose that character.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clarisse Loughrey from The Independent (UK)<\/a> gave it 1\/5 and called it \u201csimultaneously derivative and so crammed with new Smurfs lore.\u201d Kevin Maher from The Times (UK)<\/a> summarized, \u201cProfoundly, oppressively empty. There\u2019s no reason to see it.\u201d<\/p>\n
