The Bulldogs’ last victory in the series came during their previous home meeting in 2012.

The matchup features a coaching reunion as Mississippi State’s Jeff Lebby will host his former boss Josh Heupel. The two coaches worked together at Oklahoma early in their careers before reuniting at UCF in 2018 and 2019.

Mississippi State has exceeded preseason expectations after entering the year with a regular-season win total of 3.5 games according to sportsbooks. The Bulldogs defeated Arizona State 24-20 in their biggest test, with quarterback Blake Shapen connecting with receiver Brennen Thompson on a late touchdown pass for the victory.

The Bulldogs are averaging nearly 40 points per game behind an offense that rushes for 206 yards per contest. Shapen, a former Baylor transfer who missed most of last season with injury, has completed 67% of his passes for 884 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions.

Mississippi State’s receiving corps features two key targets in Thompson, an Oklahoma transfer with 17 catches for 291 yards and three touchdowns, and Georgia transfer Anthony Evans III, who has 21 receptions for 290 yards from the slot position.

Tennessee bounced back from a loss to Georgia with a victory over UAB but faces questions in its secondary due to injuries. The Volunteers likely will be without cornerback Rickey Gibson for the remainder of the season, while Jermod McCoy continues recovering from an ACL injury.

Mississippi State’s discipline has been a concern, as the Bulldogs have committed 41 penalties this season, ranking second-most nationally. Their rushing defense allowed 251 yards against Arizona State and ranks 68th nationally at 136 yards per game.

Who: Mississippi State Bulldogs vs Tennessee Volunteers

When: 4:15 p.m. ET, Sept. 27

Where: Davis Wade Stadium

Stream: DirecTV (free trial); FuboTV (free trial); Paramount+ (free trial); SlingTV; ESPN+; Peacock; Max

Betting: Check out our MA sports betting guide, where you can learn basic terminology, definitions and how to read odds for those interested in learning how to bet in Massachusetts.

What is DirecTV?

DirecTV is an internet TV service that offers your favorite entertainment, news and sports channels, as well as local TV stations and regional sports networks.
