FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Viktor Hovland has withdrawn from the final round of the Ryder Cup, forcing organizers to use a little-known rule for the first time in more than 30 years.

Hovland, a Norwegian playing for Team Europe, has been working through a neck injury for several months. It flared up during a Saturday morning match, causing him to take painkillers and receive medical treatment during the round. He pulled out of his afternoon match and had an MRI done, but, in a statement, Europe said that Hovland awoke Sunday morning not able to move his neck. He made the final decision to withdraw after attempting to begin his warmup here at Bethpage.

“There is nothing more I would like to do than be out there representing Team Europe and trying to help them win the Ryder Cup today. Not being able to do so is pretty heartbreaking. I will be backing my team as hard as I can and rooting them on,” Hovland said in a statement.

Because Hovland cannot play, the “envelope rule” is put into effect. Each captain must put the name of one of their players in an envelope and hand it in along with their singles lineup for the Sunday matches.

Should someone not be able to play on one side, the name on the envelope is revealed and removed from the lineup. In this case, that’s the United States’ Harris English.

Each player is awarded a half-point. English and Hovland were already scheduled to compete in the 12th and final match of the day, at 2:03 p.m., so no adjustment to the schedules or lineup was necessary. Europe now leads 12-5, needing only two more points to retain the Ryder Cup and win on the road for the first time since 2012.

Hovland finishes his third Ryder Cup with a 1-1-1 record, having won his Saturday match alongside Robert MacIntyre, 1 up over the team of Russell Henley and Scottie Scheffler.

The envelope rule was first put into place in 1979, at the same time that the competition extended to include all of Europe. It was last used in 1993, when Europe’s Sam Torrance could not compete because of a toe injury. Given the lopsided nature of the score in 2025, it should not directly affect the final result, but in 1991, controversy ensued when the United States’ Steve Pate withdrew due to lingering issues from a limousine crash earlier in the week. He was scheduled to play Europe’s Seve Ballesteros, one of the legends of the Ryder Cup, and Ballesteros instead had to play Wayne Levi, the Americans’ worst player that week.

Europe was frustrated, complaining that Pate had played the afternoon prior and accusing the United States of gaming the rules to earn a half-point in a competition it won 14 1/2- 13 1/2.
