Newcastle United wanted a late penalty against Arsenal when the ball struck Gabriel Magalhaes\u2019 arm, but no penalty was the correct decision, \u201cby the letter of the law\u201d.<\/p>\n
Jarred Gillett had a busy afternoon refereeing Newcastle\u2019s home defeat to Arsenal on Sunday<\/a>. He awarded the visitors a first-half penalty but overturned his decision, had to deal with some Gabriel and Nick Woltemade fisticuffs, and denied the Magpies a spot-kick late on.<\/p>\n There\u2019s no doubt that Gabriel handled the ball in the box, but Gillett said no penalty as the ball hit the defender\u2019s shin before striking his arm, which VAR also deemed to be the case.<\/p>\n The appeal came with the score level and Arsenal<\/a> went on to win the game via a Gabriel header in the 96th minute.<\/p>\n \ud83d\udcec MAILBOX:\u00a0Arsenal player \u2018wants a dry slap\u2019 but three things improved for Gunners<\/a><\/p>\n After the game, Sky Sports pundits Jamie Redknapp and Les Ferdinand discussed the decision<\/a>, with the former claiming Gabriel was \u201creally, really lucky\u201d.<\/p>\n Ferdinand said:\u00a0\u201cWhen I saw it, I shouted handball straight away, because you see it hit his hand. It looks like he gets a touch on it and then it hits his hand. So it\u2019s a tough one, but I think they got the decision right in the end.\u201d<\/p>\n Redknapp then added:\u00a0\u201cYou can just see it just squeezes out here. It\u2019s like they both get into the ball at the same time, Gabriel and Elanga, and it just almost gets teed up and then pops up into the air and then hits his arm.<\/p>\n \u201cWhere he\u2019s really, really lucky, Gabriel, is that his arm is in an unnatural position. There\u2019s no way you can say that it isn\u2019t. And if they had given that, I don\u2019t think there would\u2019ve been too many complaints.\u201d<\/p>\n Challenged by host Kelly Cates, Redknapp continued:\u00a0\u201cBut that is extremely high. Kelly, I don\u2019t think that would be disproportionate, if that\u2019s the right word.<\/p>\n \u201cYou can see it here, it gets so high and you don\u2019t need to get it up that high.
