A subsidized broadband program in New York City has won a three-year extension \u2014 along with some fresh funding.<\/p>\n
The program, called Big Apple Connect<\/a>, launched in September 2022.<\/p>\n It has since provided \u201cfree, fast, reliable and safe Internet\u201d to 330,000 people who live in some 220 developments operated by the New York City Housing Authority, or NYCHA, according to city officials.<\/p>\n According to a statement<\/a>, the extension also includes $1.2 million from digital TV providers Optimum and Spectrum for digital literacy programming at libraries. The program also includes a new webpage with \u201cvirtual training sessions,\u201d job search assistance and other features.<\/p>\n City officials estimate the program saves participating households at least $1,700 a year.
