{"id":190952,"date":"2025-09-29T23:17:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-29T23:17:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/190952\/"},"modified":"2025-09-29T23:17:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-29T23:17:07","slug":"with-nj-pbs-shutting-down-in-2026-some-on-its-board-of-trustees-and-chair-resign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/190952\/","title":{"rendered":"With NJ PBS shutting down in 2026, some on its board of trustees and chair resign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With NJ PBS slated to go off the air next year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nj-pbs-shutting-down-in-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">because of budget cuts<\/a>, some members of its board of trustees and chair resigned Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NJ PBS said WNET, channel 13 in New York, which is licensed by New Jersey, could not reach a deal with the New Jersey Public Broadcasting Authority after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-signs-rescissions-package-foreign-aid-npr-pbs-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">President Trump signed legislation clawing back $9 billion in foreign aid and public broadcasting funding<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The recent cuts by the federal government and New Jersey state government have been very significant,&#8221; NJ PBS said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It won&#8217;t be the same&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;NJ Spotlight News&#8221; anchor Briana Vanozzi announced to viewers that NJ PBS will go dark in 2026, but that the show will hang on.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After June 2026, this program will continue to be produced and will air on 13, its digital platforms, and will be made available to other outlets interested in carrying it,&#8221; Vanozzi said.<\/p>\n<p>But after Monday&#8217;s resignations, political analyst Micah Rasmussen said it&#8217;s unclear how the program will change.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will see if there are other entities interested in providing service, but it won&#8217;t be the same. Chris Christie decided the state should not be in the public broadcasting business and stopped funding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Andy Kim said he partly blames Mr. Trump after he signed the legislation\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/public-broadcast-cuts-pbs-npr-stations-coping\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">impacting some 330 PBS and 246 NPR stations<\/a>\u00a0across the country.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Across the board we&#8217;re seeing cuts, and, yes, that&#8217;s something that I have real concerns about,&#8221; Kim said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kim said he&#8217;s hoping to discuss it further with the next governor, Democrat Mikie Sherrill or Republican Jack Ciattarelli.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>State Assemblywoman Aura Dunn is one of the lawmakers fighting for NJ PBS, where she worked on &#8220;Sesame Street&#8221; and for Fred Rogers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Dunn says other Republicans do not share her views, she said it&#8217;s not all Mr. Trump&#8217;s fault.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was a state investment. A state commitment to local public television that was cut by $750,000 this year, which was ultimately the nail in the coffin,&#8221; Dunn said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Phil Murphy&#8217;s spokesperson said Democrats were the only ones providing state-level funding to public television since the 1990s, including $4.25 million under his administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every responsible budget, including this one, requires hard decisions,&#8221; Murphy said in his budget address.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/team\/Christine-Sloan\/\" class=\"content-author__name\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christine  Sloan<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"content-author__text\">Christine Sloan is an Emmy Award-winning reporter, who covers New Jersey for CBS News New York.
