{"id":191120,"date":"2025-09-30T00:57:20","date_gmt":"2025-09-30T00:57:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/191120\/"},"modified":"2025-09-30T00:57:20","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T00:57:20","slug":"seven-former-uh-rotc-cadets-posthumously-promoted-by-u-s-army","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/191120\/","title":{"rendered":"Seven former UH ROTC cadets posthumously promoted by U.S. Army"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reading time:   &lt; 1 minute<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/system-former-ROTC-cadets-promoted.jpg\" alt=\"solider in uniform headshots\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-222781\"  \/>Top, from left: Daniel Betsui, Robert Murata, Jenhatsu Chinen<br \/>Bottom, from left: Howard Urabe, Hiroichi Tomita, Grover Nagaji, Akio Nishikawa<\/p>\n<p>Seven Japanese American soldiers from Hawai\u02bbi who trained as cadets in the University of Hawai\u02bbi Army ROTC program received the honors they were denied more than 80 years ago due to wartime prejudice.<\/p>\n<p>At the request of Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s Congressional Delegation, the U.S Army posthumously promoted Grover Nagaji, Howard Urabe, Robert Murata, Jenhatsu Chinen, Daniel Betsui, Hiroichi Tomita and Akio Nishikawa, to the rank of second lieutenant.<\/p>\n<p>After being expelled from ROTC under policies tied to Executive Order 9066, the men volunteered for service in the 100th Infantry Battalion\/442nd Regimental Combat Team\u2014the most decorated unit in U.S.. military history. All seven were killed in combat in Europe in 1944.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese young men wanted to serve as leaders in the U.S. Army. They trained for it, they earned it, and they were denied that chance because of wartime prejudice,\u201d said U.S. Representative Jill Tokuda. \u201cBut they still put on the uniform and gave their lives in defense of our country. Today, we finally recognize them as the officers they were meant to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, UH awarded the group of students posthumous bachelor\u2019s degrees. The Army\u2019s action now completes a decades-long effort to honor their leadership and sacrifice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is only right to honor these seven Americans who, through setback, strife and sacrifice, continued to remain committed to the ideals and principles espoused in the Constitution of the United States,\u201d said Lt. Col.
