Cooper Flagg<\/a>‘s whirlwind year has carried him from Cameron Indoor Stadium to the NBA’s biggest stage. Just one season after arriving at Duke<\/a> as the nation’s top recruit, the 19-year-old forward was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks<\/a>. On Monday, he took part in his first NBA Media Day, reflecting on his path and what lies ahead.<\/p>\n

Flagg smiled when asked about meeting Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki<\/a> at a recent charity event. “I thought it was really cool. That was my first time meeting Dirk in person and getting to be around him, so it was really cool to hang out and see the impact that he still has here in Dallas.”<\/p>\n

It has been a year packed with surreal moments for Flagg. He described the Ryder Cup as “incredible,” adding that “I’ve never seen a golf environment like that. It was so competitive, people were chanting. I think meeting Michael Jordan was a dream come true. That’s somebody I’ve always seen as the GOAT in my household.”<\/p>\n

Those kinds of experiences only reinforce how quickly Flagg has risen. At Duke, he was the centerpiece of Jon Scheyer’s young roster, leading the Blue Devils on both ends of the floor while delivering on the hype of his No. 1 national ranking. His playmaking and defensive versatility made him one of college basketball’s most dynamic freshmen, and his competitiveness helped fuel a deep NCAA Tournament run.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead to his rookie season, Flagg says the approach will not change. “Expectations wise for myself, I think it’s just about being myself really. Going through it and not changing for anybody. Obviously impacting the game in a lot of different ways and doing everything I can to impact winning at a high level.”<\/p>\n

That mindset carries into how he envisions fitting in with Dallas. “Between three or four different guys on the court at all times, getting a stop and just getting off the rim and going \u2014 between me, PJ, Max, AD \u2014 all of us can bring it up and initiate the offense. That’s what we’ve talked about a lot, just letting it happen organically.”<\/p>\n

On personal and team goals, Flagg did not hesitate. “I’d like to be Rookie of the Year and those sort of individual goals. But as a team, I just want a lot of success, a lot of wins. Obviously we want to win a championship. If I can stay true to who I am and what got me here, then any of the personal goals will work themselves out.”<\/p>\n

He also credited the veteran presence around him, particularly two former No. 1 picks who know the spotlight well. “It’s been cool, obviously some of the best vets in the league right now, some of the most experienced guys. Just having this opportunity to learn from them, spend time around each other, and get on the court has been really good for me.”<\/p>\n

And for Duke fans, Flagg delivered a moment to smile about when asked about Blue Devil pride in the locker room. “It’s a lot of Duke pride. We just started meeting today, doing pictures, and Kyrie and AD were going back and forth between Kentucky<\/a> and Duke. Everybody has their own thing, and it always comes out.”<\/p>\n

For Flagg, that pride in Durham is now part of his NBA identity. The foundation he built in one season at Duke prepared him for the challenges to come.
