With our citizenry heavily armed and our government deciding it could tolerate any amount of death by gun violence, the U.S. has a relationship with firearms like no other. But in recent weeks, we\u2019ve gone from the typical \u201cthoughts and prayers\u201d and sharing of that Onion<\/a> article, to something a little more sadistic: Guessing the ideology of the shooters. In an effort to keep up with social media detectives, the news media attempts to sort through the slogans, memes, and manifestos of the shooters and ends up giving the shooters exactly what they want. In what is probably the best and most incisive Daily Show<\/a> segment in weeks, Jon Stewart hands in his hypocrisy police badge and examines a new phenomenon that has become a daily debate.<\/p>\n

As President Trump was sending in the troops to \u201cWar ravaged\u201d Portland, there were five mass shootings this weekend. CNN reports<\/a> that there have been 324 such events this year, and the terror of them has become so normalized that many of these shootings slip into the background noise of America\u2019s final years. However, as Stewart explains, a shift has happened recently, replacing the mournful solemnity with a game of \u201cwas this one of yours?\u201d Determining the slippery ideology of mass shooters has become the news\u2019 go-to way of covering these events, filling air time with speculation from guys like Fox News\u2019 Kurt the Cyber Guy, who is here to explain what Discord is. In essence, the shootings are used as ammo for polarization and political windfalls. However, while the rhetoric of political figures has been intensifying for years, the underlying problem has remained the same. What\u2019s really changed is how it\u2019s covered.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think any of these psychotic mother fuckers that are doing this are watching MSNBC,\u201d Stewart says. \u201cI mean, I\u2019m only judging from the ratings. To suggest that we don\u2019t need to tackle any complex, deep-rooted issues haunting American society, we just need to stop saying a few choice bad words, and all our mentally broken young men will be fine, is not realistic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Among the many problems with this type of coverage, as Stewart explains, is that there used to be some responsibility not to share too much information about these killers because that\u2019s what the killers want. Reciting their names, showing their photos, and reading their manifestos galvanizes other attention-seeking murderers to follow suit. Decoding the messages of irony poisoned young men doesn\u2019t really solve the issue at hand. It only serves to give the next shooter an idea: write a message on a bullet.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are we taking the bait from these psychos?\u201d Stewart asks. \u201cDoesn\u2019t anybody think it\u2019s weird that these people just started writing on bullets all of a sudden, like that\u2019s the most effective way to get out their deeply-held political beliefs? \u2018Anti-ICE,\u2019 enough said.
