A toxic atmosphere engulfed Bethpage Black in Long Island as Europe\u2019s Ryder Cup team endured slurs and personal insults on their way to a 15-13 victory over the hosts.<\/p>\n

The Ryder Cup is famed for its rowdy fans, which contrast to the genteel crowds typically drawn to the sport. But many commentators believe a minority of U.S. supporters crossed a line<\/a>\u00a0during the three-day contest.<\/p>\n

Watson, the eight-time major title winner who captained the U.S. team in 1993 and 2014, was among those to weigh as the dust settled on Europe\u2019s second successive victory.<\/p>\n

On X<\/a>,\u00a0Watson congratulated Team Europe for the win, before adding,\u00a0\u201cMore importantly, I\u2019d like to apologize for the rude and mean-spirited behavior from our American crowd at Bethpage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a former player, Captain and as an American, I am ashamed of what happened,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Northern Ireland\u2019s Rory McIlroy was on the receiving end of some of the worst and most personal abuse, and his wife was even hit by a cup of beer<\/a>\u00a0thrown from the crowd.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, McIlroy told boisterous fans to \u201cshut the fuck up\u201d as they shouted while he prepared a shot.<\/p>\n

At one stage, McIlroy\u2019s teammate, Shane Lowry,\u00a0reportedly<\/a> called over a state trooper to have a fan removed for aiming a comment at McIlroy before he hit a drive.<\/p>\n

McIlroy later called out the hostile New York crowd for \u201cunacceptable and abusive behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think we should ever accept that in golf,\u201d McIlroy told reporters at a press conference Sunday following Europe\u2019s victory. \u201cI think golf should be held to a higher standard than what was seen out there this week.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Saturday, current U.S. captain Keegan Bradley\u00a0defended<\/a> the home crowd as\u00a0\u201cpassionate\u201d while admitting\u00a0\u201ca few people\u201d did\u00a0\u201ccross the line.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I\u2019m watching,\u201d the president wrote<\/a>\u00a0on Truth Social. \u201cCongratulations!\u201d<\/p>\n
