SAN ANTONIO \u2013 A live pipe bomb was found at an apartment complex Tuesday morning along Interstate 10 on the Northwest Side. <\/p>\n
San Antonio police Sgt. Travis Gourley said a maintenance worker found the suspicious device before 9 a.m. in a grassy area at the apartment complex, located in the 10700 block of I-10 westbound near Huebner Road.<\/p>\n
The employee took the device to the office and noticed it looked \u201csuspicious,\u201d Gourley said.<\/p>\n
The employee then called 911. <\/p>\n
\u201cBomb squad made the scene \u2014 they determined the device to be a live device. They decided to make the device safe enough to transport, and it will be transported away from the location,\u201d Gourley said, adding that the device will be destroyed.<\/p>\n
Gourley said the bomb had \u201cblack powder leaking out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Officers evacuated residents within 300 feet and are speaking with residents and witnesses, Gourley said. Officers are searching the area with K-9s and Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday afternoon, an SAPD spokesperson said it is unclear how the device made its way to the complex. Additionally, no arrests have been made. <\/p>\n
The San Antonio Fire Department\u2019s arson unit has since taken the lead on the investigation, SAPD said. <\/p>\n
Police are asking drivers to avoid the area.<\/p>\n
