SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB\/WSHM) – If you\u2019re planning on shipping out gifts or cards this holiday season\u2026 you might want to get a head start. <\/p>\n
The United States Postal Service is temporarily increasing their prices on packaging services this holiday shopping season starting this weekend and ending in mid-January. People making shipments of their own Tuesday seemed pretty upset by the news\u2026 \u201cThat\u2019s really messed up!\u201d Said one customer. \u201cThat\u2019s not fair for nobody. Added another. \u201cHolidays are hard enough.\u201d Someone else added.<\/p>\n
The postal service stated that the price increases are intended to \u201chelp cover extra handling costs\u201d and that the change is \u201cin line with competitive practices.\u201d<\/p>\n
The holiday price increase all comes down to the weight. Regardless of the size of the box, if you\u2019re sending a package within 600 miles of where you live, here\u2019s how the price bump will impact you: for packages zero to three pounds there will be a 40 cent increase, four to 10 pounds will be a 60 cent increase, 11 to 25 pounds is a 95 cent increase, and anything 26 pounds or more will have an additional three dollar increase.<\/p>\n
The prices are a little different if you plan to ship express or if you are a commercial customer rather than a retail customer. So, you just may want to get those presents purchased and sent before the price goes up this Sunday, October 5. <\/p>\n
Western Mass News has reached out to the United States Postal Service for comment on the matter, but we have not yet heard back.<\/p>\n
