They may be one of Florida\u2019s worst invaders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">ORLANDO, Fla. \u2013 Many Florida residents may have happened across a scene much like the image above: a cluster of tiny pink blobs attached to concrete or plants near bodies of water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">What residents and visitors may not know is that these eggs may belong to what has been dubbed one of the \u201cworld\u2019s worst invaders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">More specifically, the <a href=\"https:\/\/myfwc.com\/research\/freshwater\/species-assessments\/mollusks\/apple-snails\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/myfwc.com\/research\/freshwater\/species-assessments\/mollusks\/apple-snails\/\">Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission<\/a> identifies these clusters as egg clutches for exotic apple snails.<\/p>\n<p>An apple snail egg case is a distinctive bubble gum pink color. (Copyright 2021 by KSAT &#8211; All rights reserved.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In Florida, these snails come in four main varieties: the island apple snail, the channeled apple snail, the spike-topped apple snail, and the titan apple snail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The channeled apple snail in particular poses a big threat, as it eats all sorts of aquatic plants, fruits, vegetables, algae, animal remains and even other snail eggs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIn the last decade, apple snails have received attention because of their ability to damage wetland crops through foraging&#8230;\u201d FWC officials note. \u201cBecause of damage to crops, the channeled apple snail is listed as one of the world\u2019s worst invaders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Image of Apple snail via San Antonio River Authority) (KSAT)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">However, the Sunshine State does have a native species of apple snail. Native clutches will appear white and much larger than their foreign counterparts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The FWC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=619501003543736&amp;id=100064515256996&amp;set=a.218441140316393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=619501003543736&amp;id=100064515256996&amp;set=a.218441140316393\">released a handy image<\/a> in 2023 to help distinguish between these two sets of eggs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In Central Florida, apple snail eggs typically appear during the warmer months, particularly in spring and summer. An individual clutch can have hundreds \u2014 if not thousands \u2014 of eggs, depending on the species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">These eggs have a neurotoxin in them \u2014 so don\u2019t touch \u2014 and they can carry the rat lung worm parasite. Worse yet, they\u2019re dangerous if eaten raw.<\/p>\n<p>Invasive apple snails are shown with a pink egg clutch. (KSAT 12)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">This time of year is also when the temperature and humidity are conducive to their reproduction and egg-laying behavior.
