\n\tGoogle\u2019s YouTube TV<\/a> has dropped Univision<\/a>\u2018s local TV stations \u2014 along with other TelevisaUnivision<\/a>-owned networks \u2014 after the two sides failed to come to terms on a contract renewal Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\n\tIf TelevisaUnivision\u2019s programming remains unavailable to YouTube TV subs for an \u201cextended period of time, we\u2019ll offer our Spanish Base subscribers a $6 credit or refund depending on your billing provider,\u201d Google said in a message to the pay-TV service\u2019s customers.<\/p>\n

\n\tGoogle separately Tuesday was squaring off with NBCUniversal in contract renewal talks for YouTube TV<\/a>. NBCU\u2019s current YouTube TV deal also is set to expire Sept. 30. As of this writing, talks between NBCU and Google continue.<\/p>\n

\n\tUnivision is the biggest Spanish-language broadcaster in the U.S., with 59 owned and\/or operated stations. In addition to dropping Univision\u2019s stations, YouTube TV pulled TelevisaUnivision channels UniMas, TUDN, Galavision, FOROtv, De Pel\u00edcula, De Pel\u00edcula Cl\u00e1sico, Bandamax, Telehit, Telehit M\u00fasica and tlnovelas.<\/p>\n

\n\tYouTube TV also said that customers\u2019 DVR recordings of Univision and other TelevisaUnivision programming have been removed.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTelevisaUnivision has over 160 million subscribers and billions of views across YouTube, where they generate ad revenue from their content,\u201d a YouTube spokesperson said in a statement. \u201cOn our paid live TV subscription service, YouTube TV, however, TelevisaUnivision only represents a tiny fraction of overall consumption. Since we have not reached a new agreement with them, their content is no longer available on YouTube TV.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe YouTube spokesperson added, \u201cWe encourage viewers to continue watching TelevisaUnivision\u2019s content on their YouTube channels or on their streaming platform, ViX.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn response, TelevisaUnivision said in a statement: \u201cGoogle\u2019s YouTube TV has refused to \u2018Do the Right Thing\u2019 and dropped Univision from its platform \u2014 stripping millions of Hispanic viewers of the Spanish-language news, sports, and entertainment they rely on every day. Google\u2019s actions are especially tone-deaf and egregious on the eve of a potential government shutdown, disregarding the appeals of government officials and Hispanic organizations who urged them to keep Univision on the main bundle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTo add insult to injury, YouTube TV chose to take this step during Hispanic Heritage Month \u2014 an act that is deeply insensitive and offensive,\u201d TelevisaUnivision\u2019s statement continued. \u201cGoogle has made an unfortunate mistake that is easily reversible, and we are always open to finding constructive ways for Hispanics to regain access to their trusted and critical content. We remain steadfast in advocating for our audience and ensuring that YouTube TV subscribers know they have many options to continue watching Univision\u2019s programming through other providers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tUnivision\u00a0previously claimed<\/a>\u00a0that YouTube TV planned to remove Univision from its basic bundle and \u201cwill force Hispanics to pay another $15 a month \u2013 an 18 percent \u2018Hispanic Tax\u2019 \u2013 to access Univision.\u201d TelevisaUnivision alleged that Google\u2019s move to put Univision on a separately priced add-on tier was \u201cdiscriminatory and an abuse of its market power.\u201d A Google rep disputed the suggestion it was being \u201cdiscriminatory\u201d in the matter, saying that carriage renewal decisions for YouTube \u201care based on viewer consumption and pricing, and any suggestion to the contrary is false.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe dispute between Google and TelevisaUnivision captured the attention of lawmakers including Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas).<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cGoogle\/YouTube should not put @Univision and @Telemundo behind a paywall,\u201d Cruz wrote in a post Tuesday morning on X. \u201cGoogle shouldn\u2019t be abusing its monopoly power by forcing millions of Texans & Americans to pay extra for Spanish-language programming. That\u2019s not right & it\u2019s not fair.\u201d (All of YouTube TV is \u201cbehind a paywall\u201d; the base package is $82.99\/month.
