The teasers for The Carpenter\u2019s Son thus far haven\u2019t been shy at all about making Nicolas Cage<\/a>\u2018s latest\u2014a horror movie about Jesus\u2014look extremely freaky. There was the clip that featured mostly agonized wailing<\/a>, followed by the one with Cage\u2019s instantly viral pronunciation of Satan<\/a> as \u201cSuh-tan.\u201d So expectations were high for the full trailer, and now that it\u2019s here, it does not disappoint.<\/p>\n

Given the cultural temperature of the U.S. these days, you can expect some controversy to follow a movie that\u2014while clearly framed as a horrific fantasy\u2014explores the life of Jesus. You need only look back at Martin Scorsese\u2019s The Last Temptation of Christ or\u00a0the recent Hollywood Bowl production of Jesus Christ Superstar for proof that any offbeat interpretation of the Bible can become a lightning rod for protests.<\/p>\n

That could end up being a bonus for The Carpenter\u2019s Son, raising its profile among curious horror fans even if it draws the ire of close-minded types who feel threatened by artistic expression. \u201cSuh-tan\u201d works in mysterious ways, after all!<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the official logline:<\/p>\n

A remote village in Roman-era Egypt explodes into spiritual warfare when a carpenter, his wife and their child are targeted by supernatural forces in\u00a0The Carpenter\u2019s Son. Joseph (Nicolas Cage), Mary (FKA twigs) and their teenage son Jesus (Noah Jupe) have lived for years under threat, clinging to their faith and traditions. But a stopover in a small settlement unleashes growing chaos when a mysterious stranger (Isla Johnston) tries to entice young Jesus to abandon his devout father\u2019s rules. With every pull of temptation, the boy is lured into a forbidden world, as a terrified Joseph realizes that a demonic power is at work. Violent, unnatural events inexplicably follow Jesus, and he begins to experience nightmarish visions of the future. Finally, he learns the fearsome truth about his new playmate, as well as the child\u2019s real name: Satan. Writer and director Lotfy Nathan, drawing from his Coptic Christian background, delivers a meticulously crafted, genre-bending supernatural thriller packed with unshakeable images of the divine and demonic at war.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, Magnolia Pictures also revealed the poster for The Carpenter\u2019s Son, which uses maybe the most familiar quote from the Lord\u2019s Prayer (at least, as far as horror heads are concerned) as its tagline. It also goes close in on various eyeballs to show us that every character in this movie is going to be haunted as hell, or perhaps haunted by hell.<\/p>\n
