{"id":19614,"date":"2025-07-18T18:46:08","date_gmt":"2025-07-18T18:46:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/19614\/"},"modified":"2025-07-18T18:46:08","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T18:46:08","slug":"alex-jensen-has-long-term-view-in-reshaping-utah-utes-basketball-deseret-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/19614\/","title":{"rendered":"Alex Jensen has long-term view in reshaping Utah Utes basketball \u2013 Deseret News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/sports\/2025\/03\/17\/alex-jensen-utah-basketball-introductory-press-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/sports\/2025\/03\/17\/alex-jensen-utah-basketball-introductory-press-conference\/\">Alex Jensen<\/a> is well-versed in the importance of continuity, one of the valuable lessons he\u2019s learned from nearly 20 years as a basketball coach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cContinuity, still to this day, is underrated at any level,\u201d Utah\u2019s new basketball coach told the Deseret News last month in an exclusive interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">That\u2019s a value he\u2019ll be challenged to build in reshaping the Runnin\u2019 Utes, after the majority of Utah\u2019s roster ended up in the transfer portal during the offseason following a coaching change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">While the portal is a tool that he and his coaching staff used to help retool the Utes\u2019 roster for the 2025-26 season, Jensen also tried to focus on building a foundation for the future \u2014 and not just making this year\u2019s roster work only for the upcoming season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m really trying to think long-term,\u201d said Jensen, who spent the past 12 seasons at the NBA level prior to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/sports\/2025\/03\/06\/alex-jensen-hired-utah-basketball-head-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/sports\/2025\/03\/06\/alex-jensen-hired-utah-basketball-head-coach\/\">taking over his alma mater<\/a>\u2018s program this offseason.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe portal, it\u2019s hard because (in) the NBA, you have your draft or free agency pool, and it\u2019s similar to what this is now, except for (the college transfer portal) pool is huge, it\u2019s large.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Jensen said that a year from now he expects to have an even better plan in place. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ll be a lot more organized, have a better feel for it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>What the Runnin\u2019 Utes roster looks like for next season<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">On paper, the results are promising for what Jensen and his staff were able to assemble in such a short amount of time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Part of that equation was finding a good amount of players in the portal that have multiple years of eligibility remaining \u2014 and based on the Utes\u2019 first roster under their new head coach, consider that a success.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In early June, the school announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/utahutes.com\/sports\/mens-basketball\/roster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/utahutes.com\/sports\/mens-basketball\/roster\">12-man roster for the upcoming 2025-26 season<\/a>. More pieces are coming \u2014 the team can have as many as 15 scholarship players.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Of those 12 players, the experience and eligibility is spread out: three are fifth-year seniors, three juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.50;background-color:#F3F1F0;cursor:pointer\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/7W4TWWGUANEYXCXGFK2KR2KODU.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Auburn forward Jahki Howard (3) during a game against the South Carolina on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025, in Columbia, S.C. | Scott Kinser, Associated Press <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Fifth-year seniors<\/p>\n<p>Guard Don McHenry \u2014 previously at Western Kentucky Forward Babacar Faye \u2014 previously at Western KentuckyForward James Okonkwo \u2014 previously at Akron<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Juniors<\/p>\n<p>Forward Keanu Dawes \u2014 headed into his second season at UtahGuard Terrence Brown \u2014 previously at Fairleigh DickinsonForward Seydou Traore \u2014 previously at Iowa<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Sophomores<\/p>\n<p>Forward Jahki Howard \u2014 previously at AuburnGuard Elijah \u201cChoppa\u201d Moore \u2014 previously at SyracuseGuard Jerry Huang \u2014 headed into his third season at Utah, redshirted in 2023-24<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Freshmen<\/p>\n<p>Forward Ibi Traore \u2014 headed into his second season at Utah, redshirted last season due to injuryGuard Jacob Patrick \u2014 previously played professionally in GermanyForward Kendyl Sanders \u2014 previously at IMG Academy <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Note: While nothing\u2019s been officially announced, two other players will reportedly be joining the Utes next season in freshman point guard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/sports\/2025\/06\/06\/elmery-abbey-commits-utah-basketball\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/sports\/2025\/06\/06\/elmery-abbey-commits-utah-basketball\/\">Elmeri Abbey<\/a> and juco transfer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/sports\/2025\/07\/02\/joshua-hayes-commitment-utah-basketball\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/sports\/2025\/07\/02\/joshua-hayes-commitment-utah-basketball\/\">Joshua Hayes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Of the seven players the Utes brought in from the transfer portal, three are rated four-star transfers (Howard, Moore and McHenry) and there are several with power conference level experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It\u2019s a group that will showcase just how much a developmental coach like Jensen can get out of his players.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Assembling a roster that was well-spread out in terms of eligibility remaining is no small feat, and for the Utes, there are several pieces Utah could build around beyond 2025-26 \u2014 guys like Dawes, Brown, Seydou Traore, Howard and Moore \u2014 if Jensen and his staff can retain the majority of their players in upcoming years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI got the job &#8230; and that\u2019s what I heard \u2014 the portal, portal, portal,&#8221; Jensen said. \u201cI\u2019m trying to be deliberate in all my decisions, and I think we did a good job.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>An example of continuity from the NBA ranks<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Jensen has his own perspective on seeing continuity pay dividends on the floor. It\u2019s something he can use to build on at Utah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He mentioned one example of continuity he witnessed firsthand during his time with the Jazz, where he coached for 10 years, and how it benefited the franchise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI think back to my time with the Jazz \u2014 for instance, Rudy Gobert and Joe Ingles were good in pick-and-roll because they did it for years,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd then we got Mike Conley. It took a little while, but that really took off after he had spent time with everybody and they get a good feel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.45;background-color:#F3F1F0;cursor:pointer\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2K6ELBLRZ6D5MH34OT7KAUHRIY.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"550\"\/> Scott G Winterton, Deseret News <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">While the Jazz are currently in rebuild mode themselves, Jensen was a part of the NBA franchise when the team made six-straight postseason appearances, with guys like Donovan Mitchell, Gobert and Conley leading the charge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Can finding some continuity help Utah break its NCAA Tournament drought that is going on nine years now?<\/p>\n<p>Vision for the Runnin\u2019 Utes<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Jensen has been working with his team during summer workouts, often in small groups to get to know the players better and have hands-on experience with them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Jensen, who was a part of one of the most successful runs for Utah basketball in school history, has a vision for what he wants to see from this new group of Runnin\u2019 Utes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI want to play fast,\u201d he said. \u201cI think that could be interpreted in a lot of different ways. But I want to run. I want to pass the ball. And I want guys to be confident, not be afraid to make mistakes. I think that all ties into the Runnin\u2019 Utes.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI want to play fast. I think that could be interpreted in a lot of different ways. But I want to run. I think that all ties into the Runnin\u2019 Utes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \u00a0Utah coach Alex Jensen<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Jensen further described what he envisions of the on-court product as high energy and not calling too many plays \u2014 \u201cI want to let my players play instinctually,\u201d he said \u2014 and that all ties into playing fast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Jensen said as the roster came together this offseason, it became clearer for him and his staff with each commitment what the next piece needed to be. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt was definitely a learning experience, and I love the group we have. That\u2019s one thing about roster building and why I wanted to get a GM,\u201d he said. \u201cBuilding a roster, you\u2019ve got to have balance, and you don\u2019t want to duplicate positions and players.
