Jane Goodall<\/a>, the late-trailblazing primatologist and global conservation icon, has repeatedly said she was inspired by the book\u00a0Tarzan<\/a> of the\u00a0Apes<\/a>\u00a0series growing up, influencing her profound career.<\/p>\n

Goodall has said many times during public talks and in print that Edgar Rice Burroughs\u2019 1912 book inspired her anthropological work, saying that \u201cmy Tarzan was the Tarzan of my imagination as I read this book.\u201d\u00a0The Disney film,\u00a0Tarzan,\u00a0which popularized the story, didn\u2019t come out until 1999.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, little girls of 10 can be very romantic, and I fell passionately in love with this Lord of the Jungle,\u201d adding, \u201cand what did Tarzan do? He married the wrong Jane,\u201d she said in reference to Jane Porter, the main woman in the story, and not herself. Porter is a fictional character in Tarzan, who is from Baltimore, Maryland, and the daughter of a professor.<\/p>\n

In Goodall\u2019s book,\u00a0Reason for Hope: Spiritual Journey (2000),\u00a0she wrote, \u201cI think I went through all the Tarzan books thirty feet or so above the ground. I was madly in love with the Lord of the Jungle, terribly jealous of his Jane.\u201d<\/p>\n
