{"id":200893,"date":"2025-10-04T04:34:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-04T04:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/200893\/"},"modified":"2025-10-04T04:34:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-04T04:34:09","slug":"portage-pays-182k-to-replant-250-more-trees-after-tornado-destroyed-48000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/200893\/","title":{"rendered":"Portage pays $182K to replant 250 more trees after tornado destroyed 48,000"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LSEZ5A66HZAFDET4PREAADS2GI\">PORTAGE, MI \u2014 The city of Portage lost about 48,000 trees in the May 7, 2024, tornado. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"M3HU46IAAVDO7I4WD77567Z4G4\">The city is replanting 250 of them in Celery Flats and Lexington Green Park this fall, said city spokesperson Mary Beth Block. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FXULQ6U4VVA4NDLAQ44LA25QEE\">For a city that boasts the slogan \u201cA Natural Place to Move,\u201d trees were a particularly difficult loss. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JBYOLI2C6RD75FTKYHRPU5FUYY\">\u201cGiven how long it takes trees to grow, it could be a generation before (Celery Flats) resembles anything like it did on May 6 of last year,\u201d Portage COO Adam Herringa said previously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YWLBR776HNEI7OX5KTVOI5ADEM\">City councilmembers voted Tuesday, Sept. 23, to pay Grand Rapids-based Twin Lakes Nursery $182,517 to purchase and plant 250 trees. That\u2019s about $730 per tree, plus planting services. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YLPIHFWYABEFXF44OFMOG4ENXM\">Twin Lakes submitted the lowest of three bids \u2014 others rang in at $197,361 and $226,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"43NRGGEZWVHYDB6I7OYFN4GCL4\">Even if all 250 trees were planted in Celery Flats, that\u2019d make up just 6% of the 3,900 trees lost there. This purchase by itself replaces about 0.5% of the Portage trees lost in the storm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UCI737AOWVGCDI2756Y6KH5TGU\">Portage has $260,000 to spend on tree planting, per city documents, thanks to a $150,000 state grant and $110,000 from the city budget. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CWM4RRCZKVEE7OTVSMZ3E3KIRA\">Funding for the 250 trees will come out of this pool. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SRI4CCDGXVCDTEWGICCLY3RIAQ\">It\u2019s spent just over $41,000 working with a forester and hosting two community planting events, per city documents. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RDWZVGVGEVEGVIZRTVR5IFRZEI\">Bicentennial Park and the DNR\u2019s Gourdneck State Game Area were also hit in the May 7, 2024 storm. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"I7IA3WA4PJHQTK7LWBFWZRRPDI\">On the anniversary of the storm, Portage received a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/kalamazoo\/2025\/05\/100k-in-donations-will-help-restore-tree-canopy-in-portage-after-tornado.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/kalamazoo\/2025\/05\/100k-in-donations-will-help-restore-tree-canopy-in-portage-after-tornado.html\">$100,000 donation<\/a> to remove dead trees and plant new ones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3WVYAUDNAFGEXDL4EHMUQOLJNI\">The Bicentennial Park trail closed for two weeks in September while crews removed stumps and debris from the forested surroundings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/kalamazoo\/2024\/09\/portage-trail-will-close-for-debris-cleanup-from-mays-ef2-tornado.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/kalamazoo\/2024\/09\/portage-trail-will-close-for-debris-cleanup-from-mays-ef2-tornado.html\">Kalamazoo Gazette\/MLive reported previously<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4QMRCGO4IZA37MN3LYMQYSSNJQ\">Want more Kalamazoo-area news?
