{"id":202569,"date":"2025-10-05T01:46:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-05T01:46:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/202569\/"},"modified":"2025-10-05T01:46:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-05T01:46:15","slug":"china-remembers-guiding-light-jane-goodalls-wildlife-conservation-work-jane-goodall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/202569\/","title":{"rendered":"China remembers \u2018guiding light\u2019 Jane Goodall\u2019s wildlife conservation work | Jane Goodall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Jane Goodall has been remembered as a \u201cguiding light\u201d in China, with hundreds of millions of people paying tribute online to the conservationist who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2025\/oct\/01\/jane-goodall-world-renowned-primatologist-dies\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">died this week, aged 91<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The British primatologist and founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/jane-goodall\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jane Goodall<\/a> Institute was well known in China, and her research and findings were ubiquitous in Chinese educational materials, which listed her among \u201cwomen of achievement\u201d in text books.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Her institute\u2019s flagship Roots and Shoots environmental education programme worked with more than 1,000 schools across the country, and over nearly 30 years it trained 10,000 teachers and educated countless students across 25 provinces about protecting animals and the environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Several high-profile scientists in China <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2025\/oct\/02\/dame-jane-goodall-obituary\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">paid tribute to Goodall<\/a> after her death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHer story is truly inspiring, and I was deeply influenced by it,\u201d Sun Xin, the chief science communication expert at the National Zoological Museum of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/china\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China<\/a>, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt\u2019s easy to shout slogans, but it\u2019s extremely difficult to actually get things done and make an impact,\u201d said Sun, who met Goodall on many occasions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThrough her personal efforts, she continuously advocated for animal and environmental protection, hoping that humanity would love and safeguard nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Shi Jun, from the Chinese Academy of Sciences institute of botany, and an online influencer, said Goodall was \u201ca model for all biologists and naturalists\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Goodall with schoolchildren in in Hong Kong in 2016 during a campaign to raise awareness about the illegal wildlife trade. Photograph: Bobby Yip\/Reuters<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">State media noted Goodall\u2019s \u201clong-standing connection with China\u201d, which she visited for the 17th time last year, and gave an interview to the state broadcaster CCTV, remarking on ecological improvements in China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHer environmental philosophy and spirit have influenced many people in China,\u201d reported China News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.janegoodall.org\/2017\/06\/04\/4346\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Goodall spoke<\/a> about the changes in the country since her first visit almost 20 years earlier, with government efforts driven in part by the degradation of environments such as the Yangtze River basin, and the rise of rare public protests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThere is no doubt that more and more Chinese have become aware of environmental problems and the risk of the extinction of many species due to human activity,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Goodall said it was true that China had caused great harm to the environment domestically and overseas, but her message was that the country \u201ccould lead the way in eliminating the need for fossil fuels and create a more sustainable future\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">News of her death also prompted hundreds of millions of interactions on social media platforms such as Weibo, where a related hashtag was viewed 120m times, and Bilibili, where Goodall posted videos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThank you for your contributions to wildlife research and conservation, and for setting an inspiring example for women everywhere,\u201d said one comment under Goodall\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bilibili.com\/video\/BV1oCpfzqEsb\/?spm_id_from=333.1387.homepage.video_card.click&amp;vd_source=cfd570e27d24cdc9a51604d17aaa793a\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most recent video<\/a>, in which she called for action and hope against the human violence and environmental destruction sweeping the world, and the worsening impact of climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cDecades ago, I attended the environmental programme \u2018Roots &amp; Shoots\u2019 at school, founded by Dr Goodall in my school.
