{"id":202581,"date":"2025-10-05T01:58:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-05T01:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/202581\/"},"modified":"2025-10-05T01:58:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-05T01:58:09","slug":"luis-gils-disastrous-yankees-start-raises-daunting-rotation-questions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/202581\/","title":{"rendered":"Luis Gil&#8217;s disastrous Yankees start raises daunting rotation questions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORONTO \u2014 The emergence of Cam Schlittler has given the Yankees an enviable top three.<\/p>\n<p>What became clear Saturday was they do not have a No. 4.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/04\/sports\/luis-gil-doesnt-even-make-it-three-innings-in-yankees-alds-disaster\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Luis Gil was given the ball<\/a> instead of Will Warren, and Gil then had to give the ball to his bullpen in the third inning. <\/p>\n<p>The reigning AL Rookie of the Year, who has never looked quite the same in an injury-abbreviated season, was short and ineffective in a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/04\/sports\/yankees-unravel-late-in-brutal-alds-game-1-loss-to-blue-jays\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10-1, Game 1 destruction at the Blue Jays\u2019 hands<\/a> at Rogers Centre on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Gil was often unhittable and often without control last season, when he relied on heat that touched triple-digits, struck out 10.15 batters per nine innings but walked 4.57 per nine.<\/p>\n<p>This year, after returning from a right lat strain in August, Gil\u2019s velocity has dipped in what the Yankees have said is an effort to better locate. <\/p>\n<p>Aaron Boone takes the ball from starting pitcher Luis Gil. AP<\/p>\n<p>In some ways, he may be trading off some of his best stuff for some harder contact.<\/p>\n<p>He walked no one Saturday. Charles Wenzelberg\/New York Post<\/p>\n<p>Gil lasted just 2 \u2154 innings in which he allowed four hits and two runs \u2014 both coming on home runs \u2014 while striking out two.<\/p>\n<p>The third batter of the game for the Blue Jays, Yankees-killer Vladimir Guerrero Jr., saw a changeup that got too much of the plate and hammered it out to left field for a lead the Jays never surrendered.<\/p>\n<p>An inning later it was Alejandro Kirk \u2014 who saw a 95.1 mph fastball, Gil living in the mid-90s now and not upper 90s \u2014 who jumped on a mistake four-seamer and crushed a no-doubt shot to left.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto Blue Jays\u2019 Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (27) reacts after hitting a single against the New York Yankees.
