{"id":203528,"date":"2025-10-05T15:33:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-05T15:33:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/203528\/"},"modified":"2025-10-05T15:33:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-05T15:33:07","slug":"2-killed-14-injured-in-montgomery-ala-mass-shooting-after-football-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/203528\/","title":{"rendered":"2 killed, 14 injured in Montgomery, Ala. mass shooting after football game"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At least two people have been killed and 14 injured in a mass shooting in Montgomery on Saturday night, authorities in Alabama have said.<\/p>\n<p>A woman was among those killed, and at least two of the injured were children, one of whom suffered life-threatening injuries, Montgomery Police Department (MPD) Chief James Graboys\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.montgomeryadvertiser.com\/story\/news\/local\/2025\/10\/05\/montgomery-police-confirm-mass-casualty-incident-downtown\/86534114007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">told the Montgomery Advertiser<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The massacre happened in the city\u2019s busy tourist district downtown just after the football game between Tuskegee University and Morehouse College, two historically black universities in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Police arrive at the scene of the shooting that left 2 dead. Mickey Welsh \/ Advertiser \/ USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>Fairground-style attractions were set up ahead of the game, with a ferris wheel and other rides installed in downtown.<\/p>\n<p>The shooting started when a fight broke out between two rival groups at around 11:30 p.m. in downtown Montgomery, Graboys said.<\/p>\n<p>The fracas escalated into a running gun battle that saw the perps firing wildly into a crowd, hitting bystanders.<\/p>\n<p>Law enforcement vehicles on Commerce Street following a shooting in downtown Montgomery, Ala., on early Sunday morning October 5, 2025. Mickey Welsh \/ Advertiser \/ USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was two parties involved that were basically shooting at each other in the middle of a crowd,\u201d he said, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/crime\/2025\/10\/mass-shooting-in-downtown-montgomery-2-dead-12-injured.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">reported by\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/al.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">AL.com<\/a>, adding that the shooters \u201cdid not care about the people around them when they did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So far, there have been no arrests made. Twelve of the 14 victims remain in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn total, three victims remain in life-threatening condition, and nine sustained non-life-threatening injuries,\u201d MPD Lt. Tina McGriff told the Montgomery Advertiser.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Police were patrolling \u201cwithin 50 feet of both sides\u201d of the scene when shooting broke out, Montgomery\u2019s Mayor Steven Reed told WSFA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re praying for the victims of this atrocity. We\u2019re praying for their families, their friends. We\u2019re praying for our city. Even the smallest detail could be critical to helping investigators identify those responsible,\u201d Lt. McGriff said.<\/p>\n<p>Montgomery is in the top 10 percent with regards to high crime rates in US cities, according to data from the organization\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crimegrade.org\/safest-places-in-montgomery-al\/#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">CrimeGrade.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In her February State of the State address, Ala. Gov. Sen. Tommy Tuberville said he would support the deployment of the National Guard to both Montgomery and Birmingham to combat crime in those cities.<\/p>\n<p>However, Mayor Reed has denied that his city needs the National Guard, and pointed out that violent crimes and non-violent crimes, as well as non-fatal shootings, had all decreased during the first half of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMontgomery is not a battlefield. It is a city of families, faith and future.
