\n About 100 California National Guard troops have arrived in Oregon and more are on the way, Oregon\u2019s governor said Sunday, after a judge blocked<\/a>. the president\u2019s deployment of the Oregon National Guard to Portland.\n <\/p>\n

\n Gov. Tina Kotek said the president\u2019s move to send troops from California appears to intentionally sidestep the Oregon judge\u2019s ruling.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThere is no need for military intervention in Oregon. There is no insurrection in Portland. No threat to national security. Oregon is our home, not a military target,\u201d Kotek said in a statement<\/a> Sunday.\n <\/p>\n

\n In recent weeks, Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of federal troops in Democrat-led cities such as Chicago and Portland, arguing military deployments are necessary to protect federal immigration personnel and property amid \u201cviolent protests\u201d carried out by \u201cdomestic terrorists.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The anarchy described by the president is strongly disputed<\/a> by locals who say they don\u2019t want or need federal help.\n <\/p>\n

\n California Gov. Gavin Newsom is planning to sue over the deployment, he said in a statement<\/a>.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThis is a breathtaking abuse of the law and power,\u201d he said.\n <\/p>\n

\n The White House defended the president\u2019s orders in a statement Sunday, saying Trump \u201cexercised his lawful authority to protect federal assets and personnel in Portland following violent riots and attacks on law enforcement.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cFor once, Gavin Newscum should stand on the side of law-abiding citizens instead of violent criminals destroying Portland and cities across the country,\u201d White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said in a statement to CNN.\n <\/p>\n

\n CNN has reached out to the California National Guard for comment.\n <\/p>\n

\n A judge granted a temporary restraining order Saturday<\/a> blocking Trump from sending the Oregon National Guard to the state\u2019s largest city. The Trump administration said it would appeal.\n <\/p>\n

\n The decision by US District Judge Karin Immergut \u2013 a Trump appointee \u2013 said the president appeared to have federalized the Oregon National Guard \u201cabsent constitutional authority\u201d and protests in Portland \u201cdid not pose a \u2018danger of a rebellion.\u2019\u201d The judge said Oregon attorneys showed \u201csubstantial evidence that the protests at the Portland ICE facility were not significantly violent\u201d leading up to the president\u2019s directive.\n <\/p>\n

\n While the judge noted<\/a> that recent incidents cited by the Trump administration of protesters clashing with federal officers \u201care inexcusable,\u201d she added \u201cthey are nowhere near the type of incidents that cannot be handled by regular law enforcement forces.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Immergut warned some of the arguments offered by the Trump administration \u201crisk blurring the line between civil and military federal power \u2013 to the detriment of this nation.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Last month, a federal judge in California ruled<\/a> the Trump administration broke the law when it deployed thousands of federalized National Guard soldiers and hundreds of Marines<\/a> to suppress protests against ICE actions in Los Angeles.\n <\/p>\n

\n The decision barred troops from carrying out law enforcement in the state, but the White House has appealed the decision.\n <\/p>\n

\n Immergut, in her opinion, said incidents in Portland are \u201ccategorically different\u201d from the violence seen in Los Angeles when the president federalized troops there.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cNeither outside the Portland ICE facility nor elsewhere in the City of Portland was there unlawful activity akin to what was occurring in Los Angeles leading up to June 7, 2025,\u201d the judge wrote.\n <\/p>\n
