Conan O\u2019Brien offered Stephen Colbert some legitimately comforting words about his impending late night exit on Monday \u2014 but only after O\u2019Brien jokingly told the CBS host that he warned him this could happen.<\/p>\n

To kick off his \u201cLate Show\u201d interview, O\u2019Brien plopped down in his chair and coyly asked Colbert, \u201cHow\u2019s late night? What\u2019s going on? I\u2019ve been out of it for a little bit. Catch me up on what\u2019s happening.\u201d Naturally, Colbert laughed at that, and joked that he\u2019d send O\u2019Brien the \u201cobituary\u201d for the format.<\/p>\n

The two joked about it all, but eventually, O\u2019Brien offered more serious thoughts to the host.<\/p>\n

\u201cI, of course, adore you. I love you. I know you as a person and also as a comedic force,\u201d O\u2019Brien said. \u201cAnd, like a lot of people, I\u2019m very sad that this chapter is ending, but I also want to say that you\u2019re going to do amazing things.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re going to have a lot of fun, and the connection you have \u2014 and this isn\u2019t just you, it\u2019s Mr. Kimmel and Fallon all these guys have, it\u2019s very special \u2014 the connection you have with your audience, you\u2019re taking with you,\u201d he continued. \u201cNo one else owns that. That\u2019s yours. That\u2019s yours, for the rest of your life. That\u2019s it!\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien\u2019s encouragement earned massive cheers from the crowd as he repeated that Colbert is a good man. That said, his earnestness came only after he jokingly gave Colbert an \u201cI told you so.\u201d Before things truly got going, O\u2019Brien recalled taking Colbert and his fellow late night hosts to dinner around the time that O\u2019Brien himself left the format.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018Take care of late night. If you take care of late night, late night will take care of you,\u2019 remember?\u201d O\u2019Brien recalled, putting on a fake old man voice. \u201cI said, \u2018Don\u2019t do anything to ruffle any feathers.\u2019 Remember? I said that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018And whatever you do, don\u2019t speak truth to power!\u2019 I said, \u2018Cowardice is the way!’\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
