{"id":205392,"date":"2025-10-06T17:55:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T17:55:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/205392\/"},"modified":"2025-10-06T17:55:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T17:55:08","slug":"who-is-karin-immergut-the-trump-appointed-judge-who-ruled-against-his-push-to-deploy-troops-in-oregon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/205392\/","title":{"rendered":"Who is Karin Immergut, the Trump-appointed judge who ruled against his push to deploy troops in Oregon?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf3x94q003w26pbe0be75ph@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The federal judge in Oregon who ruled against President Donald Trump by temporarily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/06\/us\/oregon-national-guard-trump-ruling-portland-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blocking his push to deploy troops to Portland<\/a> has received bipartisan praise throughout her career and has issued rulings that could be viewed as benefiting both left- and right-wing causes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf4lak900003b5zz9ik418v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            US District Judge Karin Immergut on Saturday issued a ruling that temporarily prevented the Trump administration from federalizing and deploying Oregon National Guard troops to protect an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility that has been the focus of recent protests in Portland.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf6abz600013b5zl0uwk24z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Trump administration has portrayed the protests as violent riots that needs to be quelled by the military, while officials in Oregon have said that state and local law enforcement are capable of responding and that the push to introduce troops to the city could ratchet up tensions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf63w1g00003b5zg9zeyht7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In her ruling, Immergut said state and city officials \u201cprovide(d) substantial evidence that the protests at the Portland ICE facility were not significantly violent or disruptive in the days\u2014or even weeks\u2014leading up to the President\u2019s directive\u201d ordering the deployment of troops to Oregon late last month.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf6l4ko000a3b5zfz68nbmu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The administration responded to Immergut\u2019s ruling by attempting to deploy National Guard troops from California to Oregon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf6zqgv000j3b5zjzvg55qk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a second ruling on Sunday, Immergut expanded on her earlier order, temporarily blocking the administration from deploying troops from any state to Portland, and pointedly questioning an administration attorney over what she characterized as an attempt to circumvent her earlier order.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf6sh0n000h3b5zj8iiveg6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Top Trump adviser Stephen Miller described Immergut\u2019s rulings as \u201clegal insurrection,\u201d while the president said over the weekend the judge \u201cought to be ashamed of himself,\u201d misstating the judge\u2019s gender.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf6kz5100073b5z5byqpcb6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Immergut was appointed by Trump to the federal bench during the president\u2019s first term. She has received endorsements from both Democrats and Republicans and even assisted in the investigation that led to President Bill Clinton\u2019s impeachment.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Her doggedness as a prosecutor earned her a nickname from Portland cops<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf717zq000o3b5zbwi4ye86@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Immergut was born in Brooklyn and received her bachelor\u2019s degree from Amherst College in Massachusetts in 1982 and her juris doctor from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 1987, according to her district court biography.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf7jatm00183b5zbcbyrkze@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Immergut has said her experience with big-city crime partly inspired her to pursue a career in law.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf7kefl001b3b5z8r4chh81@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cGrowing up in a city like that, you become very attuned to crime at an early age and are constantly vigilant,\u201d Immergut said in a 2004 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osbar.org\/publications\/bulletin\/04febmar\/profiles.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">profile for the Oregon State Bar<\/a>. \u201cWhat interested me was what makes people do that, and how should society deal with it. That led me to be a lawyer.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf71dq0000s3b5zqfq40gdw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After graduating law school, she worked in private practice as a litigation associate in Washington, DC, for about a year before moving to Los Angeles to work as a federal prosecutor, primarily trying cases related to narcotics and money laundering.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf7qxu0001m3b5zm4mrco9t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She then briefly moved back across the country to Vermont to work again in private practice before relocating to Oregon, where she worked as a prosecutor in Multnomah County.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf81r2d00213b5z5b2mxluq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Portland police detectives called her \u201cThe Stalker\u201d for her persistence, according to the Oregon State Bar profile.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        She grilled Monica Lewinsky, but feared being branded \u2018part of the right-wing conspiracy\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf7sgig001p3b5z7xw1bnoj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 1998, Immergut took time off from her job as a Multnomah County prosecutor to work for special counsel Ken Starr, who had spent years investigating various controversies related to Bill and Hillary Clinton.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf7zzyq001z3b5zunmpg9t6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Her time working for Starr was brief, but she served a critical role in questioning White House intern Monica Lewinsky about her relationship with the president. Clinton\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/ALLPOLITICS\/1998\/resources\/lewinsky\/timeline\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">denial of the relationship<\/a> formed the basis of his impeachment, but he was eventually acquitted by the Senate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf89ygv00253b5zuyg7xp90@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Immergut was tasked with questioning Lewinsky about precise aspects of her and Clinton\u2019s sexual relationship.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf8gaew002i3b5zg1ja1lkl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Immergut insisted the investigation was about Clinton\u2019s lying, not his sex life, and said she did not enter the job with any preconceived ideas about the president.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf8bu1600283b5z1dbbidzs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019m a pretty apolitical person,\u201d she told The Oregonian in late 1998. \u201cI felt that being conservative or liberal had nothing to do with it. I didn\u2019t go in with any anti-Clinton bias.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf51gbb00003b5z4gqns8o5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Speaking during a 1999 panel, Immergut said she nearly turned down the offer to work with Starr because she was worried about the stigma of working on an investigation that was widely perceived as a right-wing scheme against Clinton.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf40rx500063b5zgps3253e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI thought I would never get a job again,\u201d she said, according to an Associated Press report from the time. \u201cPeople thought I was crazy because I would be branded part of the right wing conspiracy.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Other notable jobs and rulings<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf8ejwr002f3b5z3cpseykx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Immergut returned to her job in Multnomah County for a few years after the Clinton case, before moving on to become a federal prosecutor for the US Attorney\u2019s Office for the District of Oregon. She moved into the top role at that office after President George W. Bush <a href=\"https:\/\/georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov\/news\/releases\/2003\/06\/text\/20030605-7.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">nominated her in 2003<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgf8jgrx002l3b5zm6gppb5x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2009, Immergut was appointed by Oregon\u2019s governor as a Multnomah County Circuit Court judge.
