\n\tNearly one year after Liam Payne died<\/a>, his former One Direction<\/a> bandmate Louis Tomlinson<\/a> is opening up about Payne\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt was really, really, impossibly difficult for me to deal with losing Liam,\u201d Tomlinson told Rolling Stone UK<\/a> in an interview published on Tuesday. \u201cNaively, I thought that because at this point, I\u2019m relatively well versed in grief for my age, that it might soften the blow. [That was] super-naive. It\u2019s very different. I\u2019ve never lost a friend before.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPayne, who was 31, died after he fell from a hotel balcony in Argentina. Tomlinson and their former bandmates Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik all paid tribute to Payne on social media<\/a>, though they have chosen to keep most details of their grieving processes private.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe band celebrated its 15th anniversary of being formed on The X Factor in July, though Tomlinson admitted that the latest milestone was \u201creally uncomfortable\u201d because he felt it was \u201cmore important than ever\u201d to acknowledge it \u201con behalf of Liam.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTomlinson went on to admit that past anniversaries made him feel \u201csick of nostalgia\u201d, though the latest one was different. \u201cYou know, there\u2019s still a level in my head [where it feels] unjust and frustrating that he\u2019s not with us anymore,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, it just brought up those feelings, although I\u2019m still living with them anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAccording to Tomlinson, Payne was the \u201csafest pair of hands\u201d in the band because he had the most entertainment experience when they were formed. \u201cWe were all just so amateur, but he was already where he needed to be by the time he did his first [X Factor] audition,\u201d he recalled. \u201cNone of us would have admitted it at the time, because you have a lot of pride as a young lad, but we all looked up to him like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTomlinson also took the opportunity to defend Payne against judgments made against him in the past, particularly after he made negative comments about his time in One Direction while appearing on a 2022 episode of Logan Paul\u2019s Impaulsive podcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe was just a very misunderstood person, I think, from a public perspective,\u201d Tomlinson told the outlet of Payne. \u201cIf there is ever any judgment on his character, I think nine times out of 10, you can reflect on that, and the reflection is that he was someone who just wanted to be liked.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe singer added that anyone who knew Payne \u201cpersonally would know how deeply unfair\u201d the backlash he received after the podcast interview was. \u201cAnything that he got wrong in life, Liam \u2014 which, by the way, we all do daily \u2014 it was never through malice,\u201d Tomlinson said. \u201cIt was only through miscommunication \u2014 him just not being able to express himself in the way he needed to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTomlinson also defended Payne in a tribute post shared via Instagram<\/a> one day after his death. \u201cAnd for the record, Liam was in my opinion the most vital part of One Direction. His experience from a young age, his perfect pitch, his stage presence, his gift for writing,\u201d he wrote alongside a photo of him and Payne performing on stage. \u201cThe list goes on. Thank you for shaping us Liam.\u201d<\/p>\n
