The iPhone lineup got a big infusion of change this year, with a brand new iPhone Air model<\/a> and more distinct Pro line. But the changes are just beginning, as next year is rumored to bring Apple\u2019s first ever foldable iPhone<\/a>. Here are three reasons why that foldable might be the first \u2018iPhone Ultra.\u2019<\/p>\n

#1: Ultra beats Max<\/p>\n

One challenge with naming the foldable iPhone is that it will have a larger screen than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. So Max will no longer<\/a> truly mean \u2018max.\u2019<\/p>\n

Apple\u2019s naming schemes don\u2019t always make sense. For example, the iPad Air should in theory be thinner and lighter than the iPad Pro. But it\u2019s not.<\/p>\n

Most of the time though, there\u2019s more coherence to Apple product names.<\/p>\n

And looking at current Apple products, there\u2019s already one example of a \u2018Max\u2019 name being usurped hierarchically by \u2018Ultra.\u2019<\/p>\n

Apple\u2019s M-class chips follow this scheme. The M3 Ultra is better than the M3 Max, which is better than M3 Pro, and so on.<\/p>\n

If Apple wants to communicate that there\u2019s a new iPhone that\u2019s better than the long-time best \u2018Pro Max,\u2019 using \u2018iPhone Ultra\u2019 makes a lot of sense.<\/p>\n

#2: Not just another \u2018Fold,\u2019 but something new<\/p>\n

Some companies unashamedly<\/a> follow Apple\u2019s lead by copying designs and naming. Apple, meanwhile, tends to prefer going its own way.<\/p>\n

Apple Vision Pro is a great example. You won\u2019t find the term \u2018VR headset\u2019 in any of Apple\u2019s Vision Pro marketing. Why? Because the product isn\u2019t a VR headset. Per Apple, it\u2019s a \u201cspatial computer.\u201d <\/p>\n

Similarly, the company\u2019s AI features aren\u2019t \u201cartificial intelligence,\u201d they\u2019re \u201cApple Intelligence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Based on this pattern, I doubt Apple will follow the \u2018Fold\u2019 naming scheme that Samsung and Google have popularized for years. The company will want to be seen as doing something new.<\/p>\n

Technically, Samsung has already used the \u2018Ultra\u2019 name too. But it\u2019s never been for a foldable model, so it\u2019s not an existing \u2018industry standard\u2019 in that sense.<\/p>\n

The \u2018iPhone Ultra\u2019 name would stand out more as being a whole new thing, rather than being \u201cjust another Fold.\u201d And that\u2019s what Apple will want.<\/p>\n

#3: Price point that\u2019s Ultra-worthy<\/p>\n

Pricing is another big reason Apple might opt for iPhone Ultra naming.<\/p>\n

Apple Watch Ultra launched in 2022 at $799\u2014significantly higher than the roughly $400 cost of the \u2018Series\u2019 Apple Watch.<\/p>\n

Rumors indicate the foldable iPhone will cost at or above $2,000<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Currently, the most expensive iPhone\u2014iPhone 17 Pro Max\u2014starts at $1,199. That\u2019s a huge jump in pricing.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re Apple, and you want to sell users on the idea of a much more expensive iPhone, sticking the \u2018Ultra\u2019 name on it seems like a winning strategy.<\/p>\n

\u2019iPhone Fold\u2019 might appear overly expensive at $2,000, but for an iPhone Ultra\u2014meaning, the best possible model\u2014it\u2019s not so bad. Psychologically, the price tag should be easier to swallow with the Ultra name attached.<\/p>\n
