{"id":210487,"date":"2025-10-09T01:25:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-09T01:25:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/210487\/"},"modified":"2025-10-09T01:25:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T01:25:07","slug":"antarctic-ocean-of-the-last-ice-age-reveals-how-a-critical-process-of-co%e2%82%82-storage-may-slow-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/210487\/","title":{"rendered":"Antarctic Ocean of the last ice age reveals how a critical process of CO\u2082 storage may slow again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/antarcticoce.jpg\" alt=\"antarctic ocean\" title=\"Credit: CC0 Public Domain\" width=\"800\" height=\"530\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                Credit: CC0 Public Domain<\/p>\n<p>Off the coast of Antarctica, the sea ice retreated toward the southernmost continent and, like a bottle cap taken off a soda bottle, that reduced pressure slowed down a process of critical carbon dioxide capture, dramatically accelerating the warming of the planet.<\/p>\n<p>But all that happened thousands of years ago, one of the death knells of the last ice age.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, the sea ice of our own age is also retreating, so it&#8217;s critical that we understand these oceanic processes that have such a profound effect on the globe.<\/p>\n<p>An oceanic seesaw<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve long known that the warming of the Antarctic Ocean contributed to the end of the last ice age, but the traditional hypothesis asserted that the abyssal water around Antarctica and the deep water of the North Atlantic warmed in a &#8220;seesaw&#8221; pattern &#8220;that suggested when one weakened, the other strengthened,&#8221; says Chengfei He, a Northeastern University climatologist.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2014an assistant professor of marine and environmental sciences at Northeastern\u2014discovered something that could be a cause for a radical reinterpretation.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of the waters of these two oceans oscillating back and forth as temperatures rose, He and his co-researchers, using <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/radiocarbon+dating\/\" rel=\"tag nofollow noopener\" class=\"textTag\" target=\"_blank\">radiocarbon dating<\/a> of deepwater seabed sediments, observed that the bottom water formations &#8220;weakened simultaneously,&#8221; he says. Their study is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-025-62958-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">published<\/a> in the journal Nature Communications.<\/p>\n<p>Deep water storage<\/p>\n<p>Antarctic Bottom Water\u2014or AABW, in marine scientist speak\u2014&#8221;forms when extremely cold, salty water sinks near Antarctica due to sea ice formation,&#8221; He says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This dense water then flows northward along the <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/ocean+floor\/\" rel=\"tag nofollow noopener\" class=\"textTag\" target=\"_blank\">ocean floor<\/a>, eventually rising at the surface,&#8221; He continues. How much of and how quickly this deep water rises is called the overturn rate, a process that links all the oceans together in a cycle called thermohaline circulation.<\/p>\n<p>The AABW formation sequesters massive quantities of &#8220;atmospheric CO2 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/deep+ocean\/\" rel=\"tag nofollow noopener\" class=\"textTag\" target=\"_blank\">deep ocean<\/a> for centuries,&#8221; He says. If its overturn rate increases\u2014that is, if the carbon-trapping waters in the deep ocean rise to the surface and release that CO2 more quickly\u2014it could represent &#8220;a critical tipping point that could dramatically alter regional climates, disrupt weather patterns globally and reduce the ocean&#8217;s capacity to absorb <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/carbon+dioxide\/\" rel=\"tag nofollow noopener\" class=\"textTag\" target=\"_blank\">carbon dioxide<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/the-antarctic-ocean-of.jpg\" alt=\"The Antarctic Ocean of the last ice age has stories to tell about a warming planet\" title=\"Robust parallel North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) and Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) overturning weakening responses to freshwater input in the North Atlantic. DOI: 10.1038\/s41467-025-62958-6<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRadiocarbon dating \u2026 water?<\/p>\n<p>Carbon dating as a concept (or even just the phrase) is familiar to many\u2014but how do we carbon date an ocean, let alone its movements?<\/p>\n<p>He says that radiocarbon\u2014a particular isotope of carbon, &#8220;radio&#8221; because it is radioactive and thus decays at a predictable rate\u2014&#8221;acts as a natural clock in seawater.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When seawater is at the surface, it acquires the contemporary radiocarbon isotope.
