{"id":210778,"date":"2025-10-09T03:59:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-09T03:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/210778\/"},"modified":"2025-10-09T03:59:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T03:59:09","slug":"the-spirit-molecule-defends-the-brain-against-stroke-in-mice-breakthrough-study-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/210778\/","title":{"rendered":"The &#8216;Spirit Molecule&#8217; Defends the Brain Against Stroke in Mice, Breakthrough Study Shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>        <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-223833\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Co-authors-of-the-study-from-the-Biological-Barriers-Research-Group-of-the-Institute-of-Biophysics-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"696\" height=\"455\"  \/>Co-authors of the study from the Biological Barriers Research Group of the Institute of Biophysics<\/p>\n<p>N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is a potent psychoactive molecule present in the brain and much of the world\u2019s plant life, but it also may be able to save humans from damage in the event of a stroke.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists in Hungary used it to reduce the harmful effects of stroke in animal models and cell culture experiments.<\/p>\n<p>Known to produce life-changing experiences reported to include the perception of dimensional travel, eco-death, encounters with intelligent beings, and the feeling of achieving a universal love with all living things, DMT can be found everywhere in nature, and is in fact produced endogenously in the human pineal gland.<\/p>\n<p>The Hungarian team, led by Professor M\u00e1ria Deli, Professor Zolt\u00e1n Nagy, and Dr. S\u00e1ndor Nardai, found that DMT treatment restored the structure and function of the damaged blood-brain barrier in mice that had suffered a stroke.<\/p>\n<p>It also improved the function of astrocytes, inhibited the production of inflammatory cytokines in brain endothelial cells and peripheral immune cells, and significantly reduced infarct volume and edema formation. The team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.adx5958\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> these results in the journal Science Advances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe therapeutic options currently available for stroke are very limited. The dual action of DMT, protecting the blood-brain barrier while reducing brain inflammation, offers a novel, complex approach that could complement existing treatments,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brc.hu\/en\/blog\/2025\/9\/19\/a-natural-compound-against-stroke-psychoactive-agent-protects-brain-vessels-and-reduces-inflammation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">says<\/a> Judit Vigh, co-first author of the work.<\/p>\n<p>PSYCHEDELIC RESEARCH:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since current stroke therapies do not always result in full recovery, a DMT-based treatment may represent a promising new alternative, mainly in combination with existing methods. The recent findings from researchers in Szeged and Budapest support the development of a therapy that goes beyond the limitations of conventional stroke treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Clinical trials have already begun abroad, and investigation on the long-term effects of DMT are currently ongoing, but there is still a long way to go before it reaches everyday medicine.<\/p>\n<p>While most European countries including Hungary consider DMT a hallucinogen and therefore controlled via strict criminal laws, both the Netherlands and Portugal have taken a more open position on DMT and arguably the more well-known ayahuasca, in which DMT is an active ingredient.<\/p>\n<p>Around 800,000 strokes occur annually in the US. 1 in 6 deaths (17.5%) from cardiovascular disease in the most recent data-collected year, were due to stroke.
