The first known <a href=\"https:\/\/galileo.library.rice.edu\/sci\/observations\/sunspots.html#:~:text=Galileo%20wrote%20his%20first%20letter,to%20him%20most%20like%20clouds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:records;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">records<\/a> were written down by Chinese astronomers in 27 B.C., but observation may go even further back if Greek philosopher Anaxagoras really, ahem, spotted one in 467 B.C. While some of the ancients thought that these shadows on our star meant changes in the cosmos, sunspots are surprisingly stable\u2014and now we know why.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sunspots are actually byproducts of magnetic field chaos. Inside the sun\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/scied.ucar.edu\/learning-zone\/sun-space-weather\/inside-sun\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:convective zone;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">convective zone<\/a>, scorching plasma cools as it moves towards the solar surface, taking energy with it. This plasma becomes denser as it loses heat and sinks, forming cooler dark spots until heat from further inside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/space\/solar-system\/a42816705\/sun-polar-vortex\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:sun;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">sun<\/a> causes it to rise again. And all the while, magnetic fields keep twisting and breaking and rearranging themselves. This explains the association of sunspots with the outbursts we know as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/phenomena\/solar-flares-radio-blackouts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:solar flares;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">solar flares<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/phenomena\/coronal-mass-ejections\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:coronal mass;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">coronal mass<\/a> ejections, which can release enough electromagnetic radiation to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/space\/a22265\/solar-flare-nuclear-war\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:threaten satellites and electrical infrastructure;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">threaten satellites and electrical infrastructure<\/a> on Earth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">More stable sunspots can possibly give more insight to the solar activity cycle, which is about 11 years long and peaks during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/animals\/a45550213\/how-the-sun-solar-maximum-will-affect-birds-migration\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:solar maximum;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">solar maximum<\/a>. Previous explanations for their stability suggested an equilibrium between magnetic fields and gas pressure, but magnetic turmoil has long made this difficult to observe. Now, an international research team using Germany\u2019s GREGOR solar telescope has finally cleared up the hazy observations of sunspots with a new method that removes interference from Earth\u2019s atmosphere and reveals strikingly clear images.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Led by researchers from the Institute of Solar Physics in Freiburg, Germany, the technique\u2014originally developed at the G\u00f6ttingen Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research\u2014has achieved what only (much more expensive) satellites were able to do before: it made the analysis of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mps.mpg.de\/solar-physics\/gregor-telescope\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:polarized light;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">polarized light<\/a> from the Sun possible. Polarization is the phenomenon of light\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/animals\/a41889190\/fertilizers-alter-flowers-electric-fields\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:electric field;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">electric field<\/a> moving back and forth, perpendicular to the direction in which the light wave itself is headed, and light is said to be polarized when it continues to propagate one way (as opposed to scattering). By taking a closer look at polarized light, the team was able to tell exactly where it was coming from within sunspots, and what was going on inside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It turned out that the equilibrium in sunspots is <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18352301\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a balance of pressure and magnetism;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">a balance of pressure and magnetism<\/a>. Magnetic fields are strongest when electrons remain unattached, but as more pressure is exerted, it forces them into pairs and weakens the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/environment\/a65090477\/magnetism-oxygen\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:magnetic field;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">magnetic field<\/a>. Just enough pressure balances out the strength of magnetic fields and keeps the sunspots intact for extended periods. This is known as <a href=\"https:\/\/warwick.ac.uk\/fac\/sci\/physics\/research\/cfsa\/people\/valery\/teaching\/khu_mhd\/KHU_mhd_handout.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:magnetohydrostatic equilibrium;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">magnetohydrostatic equilibrium<\/a>, which describes the properties of a gas or fluid (such as solar plasma) in a magnetic field.
