Franco<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Peering into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39578-deep-space-network.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:deep space,;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">deep space,<\/a> NASA&#8217;s James Webb Space Telescope has helped astronomers find places to study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gravitational-lensing-explained\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:gravitational lensing;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">gravitational lensing<\/a>, an effect in which massive objects such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15680-galaxies.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:galaxies;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">galaxies<\/a> warp space-time itself, bending and distorting the light of even more distant galaxies behind them. Each distorted arc, ring or multiplied galaxy image acts as a natural cosmic magnifying glass, offering astronomers a powerful tool to look further back into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/52-the-expanding-universe-from-the-big-bang-to-today.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the universe;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">the universe<\/a>&#8216;s history.<\/p>\n<p>What is it?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">These eight images were drawn from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stsci.edu\/jwst-program-info\/program\/?program=1727\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:COSMOS-Web program;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">COSMOS-Web program<\/a>, designed to study galaxy formation across cosmic time. One of the program&#8217;s goals is to uncover gravitational lenses, and researchers launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stsci.edu\/jwst-program-info\/download\/jwst\/pdf\/1727\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:COSMOS-WEB Lens Survey;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">COSMOS-WEB Lens Survey<\/a> (COWLS) to do just that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">By inspecting over 42,000 lensing candidates by eye, the researchers identified more than 400 promising ones. Franco<\/p>\n<p>Why is it amazing?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Gravitational lensing was first predicted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15524-albert-einstein.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Albert Einstein;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Albert Einstein<\/a> in his theory of general relativity. According to Einstein, massive objects shape the space around them, as their gravity bends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17661-theory-general-relativity.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:space-time;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">space-time<\/a>, curving paths of light rays near by.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">When a massive galaxy or galaxy cluster happens to align with a more distant galaxy behind it, the background galaxy&#8217;s light is deflected on its way to Earth.
