She was 79.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn addition to her \u201cAnnie Hall\u201d win, Hall was Oscar-nominated for best actress for \u201cReds,\u201d \u201cSomething\u2019s Gotta Give\u201d and \u201cMarvin\u2019s Room.\u201d Her other notable roles included \u201cThe Godfather,\u201d \u201cFather of the Bride\u201d and \u201cBaby Boom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHer more recent feature roles included \u201cBook Club\u201d and its sequel, \u201cPoms\u201d and her last role onscreen in 2024\u2019s \u201cSummer Camp,\u201d co-starring with Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAfter establishing herself on Broadway in 1969 as Allen\u2019s co-star in his comedy hit \u201cPlay It Again, Sam\u201d (during which the performers became romantically involved), Keaton made an impression in Hollywood as Kay Adams, the tormented girlfriend and then spouse of mobster Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), in Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s \u201cThe Godfather\u201d (1972) and \u201cThe Godfather Part II\u201d (1974).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut it was as Allen\u2019s frequent co-star and onscreen comedic foil \u2013 even after their life as a couple was over \u2013 that Keaton made her deepest impression. After reprising her role in \u201cPlay It Again, Sam\u201d in Herbert Ross\u2019 1972 screen adaptation, she appeared with the diminutive comic in his sci-fi comedy \u201cSleeper\u201d (1973) and his spoof of Russian literature \u201cLove and Death\u201d (1975).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHowever, it was the role of Annie Hall, the loopy, charming girlfriend of comic Alvy Singer (Allen) in the unconventionally structured feature, which truly launched her into the top echelon of screen actresses, scoring Oscars for best picture, best director and best original screenplay in the process. Keaton, who had served as the model for her character, also emerged as a style icon (for her off-kilter fashion sense) and an immediate influence on other young actresses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn a New Yorker profile published at the height of Keaton\u2019s first flush of fame, Penelope Gilliatt noted, \u201cShe is not at all like the many actresses who have skimmed some mannerisms off her and done insultingly mild imitations by relying on \u2018Well\u2019s and dither. Miss Keaton\u2026is not a whit like the flustered ing\u00e9nue she was cast to play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201c\u2018I\u2019ve noticed people saying \u2018La-di-da\u2019 like Annie Hall, and I don\u2019t like it, you know?\u2019 she told me. \u2018It\u2019s not a good idea to be identifiable, though it\u2019s reassuring. It feels safe in most ways, and that\u2019s bad, because it means that you\u2019re accepted, and once that happens that\u2019s where you stay. You have to watch yourself. I\u2019d like a life like Katharine Hepburn\u2019s in terms of work. She matured. She made the changes.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile Keaton would sometimes draw on the dizzy attributes of the Hall character in her later work, she quickly moved into work in other, more somber projects. She succeeded her turn as a promiscuous schoolteacher in Richard Brooks\u2019 adaptation of the shocking bestseller \u201cLooking for Mr. Goodbar\u201d (1977) with appearances in Allen\u2019s Bergmanesque drama \u201cInteriors\u201d (1978) and his dark comedy-drama \u201cManhattan\u201d (1979).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tKeaton captured a second Oscar nomination for her performance as the early 20th-century socialite-turned-radical Louise Bryant in \u201cReds\u201d (1981), a sprawling political-historical drama directed and co-authored by her then-paramour Warren Beatty, who also starred as left-wing journalist John Reed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe received strong notices for her work in Gillian Armstrong\u2019s \u201cMrs. Soffel\u201d (1984) and Bruce Beresford\u2019s \u201cCrimes of the Heart\u201d (1986), and returned to work with Allen in a small part in his period comedy \u201cRadio Days\u201d (1987). That same year, her role as a harried career woman saddled with her dead cousin\u2019s infant daughter in \u201cBaby Boom\u201d inaugurated a fruitful series of comedic collaborations with writer (and later director) Nancy Meyers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn 1990, Keaton \u2014 who was intermittently involved with her \u201cGodfather\u201d co-star Pacino from 1971 \u2014 reprised her role as Kay Adams Corleone in Coppola\u2019s long-delayed \u201cThe Godfather Part III.\u201d She made a profitable return to comedy opposite Steve Martin in Meyers\u2019 hit remake of \u201cFather of the Bride\u201d (1991) and its 1995 sequel; took another turn opposite Allen in \u201cManhattan Murder Mystery\u201d (1993); and teamed with Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn in the smash hit \u201cThe First Wives Club\u201d (1996).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tKeaton went on to garner two more Oscar nods as best actress, as a leukemia-stricken woman coping with family upheaval, opposite Meryl Streep and Leonardo DiCaprio, in Jerry Zaks\u2019 drama \u201cMarvin\u2019s Room\u201d (1996) and as a playwright who becomes involved with an aging rou\u00e9 (Jack Nicholson) in Meyers\u2019 rom-com \u201cSomething\u2019s Gotta Give\u201d (2003).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe was active as a director from the \u201880s, when she notably helmed the video for Go-Go\u2019s lead singer Belinda Carlisle\u2019s 1987 solo hit \u201cHeaven is a Place on Earth\u201d; she went on to direct episodes for the network series \u201cChina Beach\u201d and \u201cTwin Peaks\u201d and the features \u201cUnstrung Heroes\u201d (1995) and \u201cHanging Up\u201d (2000), in which she also co-starred with Meg Ryan and Lisa Kudrow. She produced the Fox series \u201cPasadena\u201d and Gus Van Sant\u2019s startling Columbine-inspired feature \u201cElephant\u201d (2003).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe published the bestselling memoirs \u201cThen Again\u201d (2011), \u201cLet\u2019s Just Say It Wasn\u2019t Pretty\u201d (2015) and \u201cBrother and Sister\u201d (2020). From the \u201870s on, she was an avid photographer whose work was collected in \u201cReservations,\u201d and she also edited several photo collections. She was also active in preserving historic houses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tKeaton received a 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute. Woody Allen, who served as presenter, twitted the fedora-wearing honoree\u2019s timeless style, quipping, \u201cShe looks like the woman in \u2018A Streetcar Named Desire\u2019 who comes to take Blanche away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAccepting the award, the actress eschewed a speech in favor of a performance of \u201cSeems Like Old Times,\u201d which she memorably sang in \u201cAnnie Hall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe was born Diane Hall in Los Angeles on Jan. 5, 1946; Allen would later take her nickname and family name for the handle of her most famous character. During high school in Santa Ana, Calif., she was active in both music and theater (and in fact played Blanche Dubois in Tennessee Williams\u2019 \u201cA Streetcar Named Desire\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAfter dropping out of college, she moved to New York to pursue acting professional using her mother\u2019s maiden name. In 1968, she landed a role in the Broadway production of \u201cHair,\u201d the \u201cAmerican tribal love-rock musical,\u201d and attracted attention by declining to strip for the play\u2019s notorious ensemble nude scene. She made her big-screen bow in \u201cLovers and Other Strangers\u201d in 1970.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAn open audition scored her the role as the female lead in Allen\u2019s \u201cPlay It Again, Sam,\u201d in which a sexually maladroit film critic receives counsel in romance from the shade of Humphrey Bogart. The co-stars became an item, but their work together on screen persisted long after they separated in the late \u201870s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe impact of her captivating performance as the aspiring singer in \u201cAnnie Hall\u201d (a role she failed to live out successfully in real life) extended well beyond her skillful acting and into the realm of national style.
