{"id":218351,"date":"2025-10-12T04:42:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-12T04:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/218351\/"},"modified":"2025-10-12T04:42:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-12T04:42:09","slug":"rock-springs-woman-bags-massive-mule-deer-dubbed-gray-ghost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/218351\/","title":{"rendered":"Rock Springs Woman Bags Massive Mule Deer Dubbed \u2018Gray Ghost\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">A Wyoming hunter said she feels blessed by how everything fell into place, giving her the opportunity to shoot a mule deer that could turn out to be one of the top monster bucks of the 2025 hunting season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Lori Dickinson of Rock Springs said that if her husband, Josh, hadn\u2019t glanced backward exactly when he did, they\u2019d have missed the buck, nicknamed \u201cthe Gray Ghost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">She and Josh were hunting with a family friend near Bondurant on Sept. 19 when she shot the buck. Preliminary measurements of the antlers include a spread of 33 \u00bc \u00a0inches and an overall gross score of 201 1\/8 inches.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">That\u2019s according to the Boone and Crockett (B&amp;C) trophy big game measuring system. It\u2019s based on taking measurements of length and girth at several points along the antlers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Spread refers to the point of maximum width between the two main antlers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">For the uninitiated, any Wyoming mule deer with either a 30-inch spread, or an overall score of 200 inches or more would be considered a true giant. A buck with both is the stuff of hunters\u2019 fever dreams.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">To top it all off, Dickinson shot it on public land, with an over-the-counter general deer tag.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">On Wednesday, she told Cowboy State Daily that\u00a0she\u00a0can still hardly believe her good fortune.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cIt was\u00a0as if God and the Universe let it happen,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Overcoming Challenges<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Dickinson\u2019s life hasn\u2019t been without challenges. She was born with\u00a0hip dysplasia. That\u2019s the medical term for a hip socket that doesn&#8217;t fully cover the ball.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">She had a hip replacement in her early 30s, and then another at age 38. The second operation left her temporarily unable to walk. And then she had to use crutches for a while after that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">She\u2019s also had heart problems and degenerative spinal discs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">None of that stopped her from enjoying the outdoors, but \u201cI\u2019m not able to get out and do the hardcore stuff,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Josh introduced her to hunting when they were first dating and it became one of her favorite ways to get outside.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cThe year that I was still on crutches, I was able to shoot my biggest deer up until that point by resting my rifle on a crutch. (Courtesy: Lori and Josh Dickinson)Arrow leftArrow rightThe Gray Ghost<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">This fall, the Dickinsons joined a close friend, who owns property adjacent to public land with plenty of deer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Photos from the friend\u2019s trail cameras showed some great bucks, including one that looked exceptionally huge.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">That friend and some others keep close watch on the mule deer winter range in the area but didn\u2019t recall seeing that particular buck.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">That\u2019s why they decided to call it the Gray Ghost; nobody was sure where it came from.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018That\u2019s The Buck!\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">The Dickinsons and their friend set out in a UTV, with their friend driving and Josh in the front passenger seat, and his wife in the back seat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">They rounded a corner near the top of a hill. There, they decided to drift down the hill with the engine turned off \u201cbecause that\u2019s where they had been seeing deer,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">As they were drifting down the hill, \u201che (Josh) just happened to turn around to look at me,\u201d Dickinson said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cAnd he was like, \u2018Oh crap, there\u2019s a deer back there,\u2019\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Then her husband got excited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cHe said, \u2018That\u2019s the buck! That\u2019s the buck from the trail camera,\u2019\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">They got out of the vehicle, and she set up for a shot.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cTo be honest, I wasn\u2019t even paying attention to the antlers,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Instead, she focused on aiming for quick kill shot on the deer, which she made.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">It was only when she got to the fallen buck and put her hands on the antlers that she realized how gigantic it was.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cTrue, I do have small hands, but I couldn\u2019t even get my hands around the antlers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">It\u2019s amazing that Josh looked back when he did, she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cWe actually drove right by this deer. Not a single one of us saw this deer,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Bucks don\u2019t get huge by being stupid during hunting season. And it\u2019s possible the Gray Ghost was trying to pull a time-honored trick deer use to evade hunters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">That being, hunker down and hide near a road, wait for the vehicle to pass, and then cross the road behind it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Mature bucks will pull the same trick with hunters on foot or on horseback; wait for the hunters to pass and then slip away behind them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">It\u2019s why many\u00a0fledgling\u00a0hunters hear from their mentors, \u201cdon\u2019t forget to look back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Man, I\u2019m Not Going To Leave This Outside\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">That night after the hunt, Dickinson was worried about her trophy antler rack. They had dogs with them, that might be tempted to chew the antlers. The same went for critters such as raccoons that might be lurking around camp.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Dickinson took the antlers into the camper with her. Her husband snapped a humorous photo of her clutching them in bed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cI told him, \u2018man, I\u2019m not going to leave this (antler rack) outside,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">She said they plan to have the antlers officially measured to get a final score.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Dickinson added that they also plan to get\u00a0a\u00a0mount of the deer\u2019s head and shoulders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">She usually prefers a European mount, meaning, only the animal\u2019s skull or skull plate and antlers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cI love a good European mount.
