ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (AP) \u2014 President Donald Trump<\/a> on Sunday warned Russia that he may send Ukraine long-range Tomahawk missiles<\/a> if Moscow doesn\u2019t settle its war there soon \u2014 suggesting that he could be ready to increase the pressure on Vladimir Putin\u2019s government using a key weapons system. <\/p>\n

\u201cI might say, \u2019Look: if this war is not going to get settled, I\u2019m going to send them Tomahawks,\u201d Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One as he flew to Israel<\/a>. \u201cThe Tomahawk is an incredible weapon, very offensive weapon. And honestly, Russia does not need that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump also said, \u201cI might tell them that if the war is not settled — that we may very well.\u201d He added, \u201cWe may not, but we may do it. I think it\u2019s appropriate to bring up.\u201d<\/p>\n

His comments came after Trump spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy,<\/a> and Trump said he mentioned possibly sending Tomahawks during that conversation. <\/p>\n

\u201cDo they want to have Tomahawks going in that direction? I don\u2019t think so,\u201d Trump said of Russia. \u201cI think I might speak to Russia about that.\u201d He added that \u201cTomahawks are a new step of aggression.\u201d <\/p>\n

His suggestions followed Russia having attacked<\/a> Ukraine\u2019s power grid overnight, part of an ongoing campaign<\/a> to cripple Ukrainian energy infrastructure before winter. Moscow also expressed \u201cextreme concern\u201d over the U.S. potentially providing Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Putin himself has previously suggested that the United States supplying long-range missiles to Ukraine will seriously damage relations between Moscow and Washington.<\/p>\n

For his part, Zelenskyy described his latest call with Trump as \u201cvery productive,\u201d and said the pair had discussed strengthening Ukraine\u2019s \u201cair defense, resilience, and long-range capabilities,\u201d along with \u201cdetails related to the energy sector.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview with Fox News Channel\u2019s \u201cThe Sunday Briefing\u201d after his call with Trump, Zelenskyy was asked whether Trump had approved the Tomahawks and said, \u201cwe work on it.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m waiting for president to yes,\u201d Zelenskyy said. \u201cOf course we count on such decisions, but we will see. We will see.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Ukrainian president said Friday that he was in talks with U.S. officials about the possible provision of various long-range precision strike weapons, including Tomahawks and more ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles.<\/a><\/p>\n

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in remarks published Sunday that \u201cthe topic of Tomahawks is of extreme concern.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump, who has been frustrated by Russia in his efforts<\/a> to end the war, said last week that he has \u201csort of made a decision\u201d on whether to send Tomahawks to Ukraine, without elaborating. A senior Ukrainian delegation is set to visit the U.S. this week.<\/p>\n

The U.S. president in recent weeks has taken a notably tougher tact with Putin, after the Russian leader has declined to engage in direct talks with Zelenskyy about easing fighting. <\/p>\n

Last month, Trump announced that he now believes Ukraine could win back<\/a> all the territory lost to Russia \u2014 a dramatic shift from the Republican\u2019s repeated calls for Kyiv to make concessions<\/a> to end Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But Trump, at least so far, has resisted Zelenskyy\u2019s calls for Tomahawks. They would allow Ukraine to strike deeper into Russian territory and put the sort of pressure on Putin that Zelenskyy argues is needed to get the Russians to seriously engage in peace talks.<\/p>\n

Trump said aboard Air Force One of the war: \u201cI really think Putin would look great if he got this settled\u201d and that \u201cIt\u2019s not going to be good for him\u201d if not.<\/p>\n
